VVT-i stands for Variable Valve Timing with intelligence. The technology was developed by Toyota to automatically and continuously varies the timing of the intake valves to improve engine performance. The “intelligence” aspect of VVT-i refers to the systems ability to sense driving conditions such as acceleration or going up or down hills.
Toyota’s Dual VVT-i technology adjusts both the intake and exhaust valves, which makes the system more efficient and assists in reducing emissions even further.
The practical upshot of this for the driver is more power, better responsiveness, better mileage, and lower emissions. VVT-i is just another example of advances in under-the-hood technology that continue to make vehicles more powerful, cleaner, and efficient.
