Ford Duratec Engines

The term Duratec can be confusing because in Europe, all Ford gasoline engines are considered to be Duratec. In North America however, only the dual overhead cam engines carry the Duratec name and the brandname is affixed to a large number of different engines.

For the US market, Duratec is a family of 4, 6 and 12 cylinder gasoline engines used primarily for Ford, Mazda, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles. The original Duratec was the 2.5L V6 as found in the Mondeo. With the introduction of the 2000 Mondeo, the 1.8L and 2.0L powerplants then became Duratecs.

This engine is built in Mexico, Spain, China and Michigan by Ford. Ford dropped their old engines in 2004 for the new Mazda MZR design making the 2005 and onward Duratecs - Mazdas. This included the 2.0L Duractec 20, the 2.3L Duratec 23 and the all new 2.5L Duratec 25.

• The Duratec 20 is a 2.0 L found in the Ford Focus. This aluminum block engine and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads offers 136 hp producing 136  ft lb of torque.  The Ford Focus sold in the clean air states of CA, NY, MA, VT and ME come PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle) equipped, which is also an option for any vehicles sold in borders states. 
• The Duratec 23 is a 2.3 L version of the Duratec 20. Just like the Duratec 20, it has an aluminum engine block, lined with cast iron and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads.
• The Duratec 23EW is a Mexican-built engine used on the Focus up until and through 2007. It offers 151 hp with 154 ft lb of torque. A variation on this engine is used for the Mazda MAZDA6, Ford Fusion, and the Mercury Milan. This Duratec 23EW is found in the 2003-2007 Ford Focus.
• Duratec 23NS is a variation of the Duratec 23 with California PZEV emissions and can be found in the 2003-2007 Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series. It offers 143 hp with 154 ft lb.
• The Duratec 25 offers more power at 171 hp and producing 171 ft lb of torque. There is also a Hybrid Duratec 25 that is going to be replaced soon with the Hybrid Duratec 23 version. As well, Ford is replacing the 2.3 L engine with a 2.5L which is to go into the 2009 Ford Escape, 2009 Ford Fusion, and 2009 Mercury Milan.
• The Duratec SCi (Smart Charge Injection) is a 1.8 L engine that first appeared in the 2003 Mondeo. Today it is available on the 2.0L engine. The SCi engines are designed in German but built in Spain. They are matched to a special six-speed manual transmission.

There are two different engines carrying the Duratec 8v name. They are equipped in the European Ford Ka and the 2003 Ford Fiesta. The 2.3 L Duratec 8V was called the Endura-E engine. The 1.3 L and 1.6L Duratec 8V are Zetec-Rocam engines.

The Mondeo V6 is an aluminum DOHC V6 first used in the 1994 Ford Mondeo.

• The Duratec 25 is a 2.5 L V6 first introduced in 1994. Based on the older Ford Mondeo it was also used on the Ford Contour. In 1995 and 1996, the Duratec 25 made the ‘Ward’s 10 Best Engines list.’
• Duratec 25 SVT has been redesigned several times upping the power to now offer 200 hp and 169 ft lb of torque and was found in the 1998 to 2000 Ford Contour SVT. The SVT received the same recognition and award as the Duratec 25 for the years 1998 and 1999.
• Duratec VE is a 2.5L V6 and is used in the second generation Ford Mondeo and the Ford Cougar.
• Duratec 30 was originally introduced in 1996 and is a slightly modified Duratec 25. Built in the Cleveland, Ohio plant since 2004, another modified version can be found in the Ford Five Hundred. Two versions are available; DAMB (direct-acting mechanical bucket) – offers 232 hp with 220 ft lb of torque and can be found in Lincoln LS and the Jaguar AJ30. RFF – offers 201 hp with 207 ft lb of torque and can be found in the Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable, and the Ford Escape.

The Cyclone is set to slowly replace the Mondeo V6 engines. It is the latest DOHC V6 family of gas engines and first appeared in September 2006 in the Lincoln MKZ.

• The Duratec 35 is a 3.5 L V6 and the first of the Cyclone engines. It offers 265 hp with 250  ft lb of torque. It can be found in the 2008 Lincoln MKX crossover SUVs, and the 2008 Ford Edge, The power drops slightly, down to 263 hp with 259 ft lb torque in the 2008 Ford Taurus, 2008 Ford Taurus X, 2008 Mercury Sable, 2009 Ford Flex and the 2008 Lincoln MKZ. For 2010, there is a twin turbocharged version of the Duratec 35 slated for the 2010 Lincoln MKS.
• The Duratec 37 is a 3.7 L V6 and can be found in the 2008 Mazda CX-9 and the 2009 Lincoln MKS. This is the second member of the cyclone engine family.

The ‘Super High Output’ V8 is a 3.4 L engine that has never been officially labeled a Duratec however this engine is based on the same design premise.

This 6.0L V12 also isn’t under the Duratec umbrella. However, it does share some of its components with the Duratec family. Called the Cosworth Project SG, it is found in the Aston Martin DB & Vantage, V12 Vanquish, and the DB9.

Ford developed the V12 for use in the Ford GT90.
