The highly anticipated 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata marks the fourth generation of this legendary roadster. Autobytel caught up with Derek Jenkins, who’s the Director of Design for Mazda North America, and he gave us a walkaround of the new MX-5, complete with insider information on what makes this version different from its predecessors. The stance of the new 2016 MX-5 is noticeably different than the outgoing model, with a lower and wider profile. The engine is lower and closer to the cabin, allowing for a sleeker hood and pronounced nose. The A-pillar and windshield surround are pulled back for a classic roadster aesthetic. The car’s profile is smooth, with limited lines and creasing. Strong fenders and round taillamps accentuate the rear and complete the classic roadster look. The interior of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 is modern and high quality, designed to make the car feel like it’s more expensive than it actually is. And although the MX-5 and Miata have always been driver’s cars first and foremost, the new interior layout really prioritizes the driving experience at a new level. Mazda calls it “driver centerline symmetry,” with the gauges and controls symmetrical within the driver’s reach. The comprehensive feel of the 2016 MX-5 is completed by integrating body colored trim into the cockpit, tying together the interior and exterior designs.
