More than half of Americans will be taking a road trip before this year's Labor Day, according to a Liberty Mutual Insurance survey*. The study also revealed that most people neglect basic safety precautions before hitting the road. For your next road trip, don't make these 5 common mistakes.

*The survey can be viewed at at www.libertymutual.com/newbeginnings.

Not Checking the Spare Tire

The report revealed that less than 28% of road trippers check the pressure on their spare tire. No sense in carrying a spare tire if you can't use it!

Not Having a Roadside Assistance Number

The study also revealed that only 22% of road trippers have a roadside assistance number readily available. Many auto insurance companies offer their own 24 hour roadside assistance, so be sure to check your policy's coverage. Once you've obtained it, keep the number not only in your cell phone, but also in your glove compartment.

Not Having a Cell Phone Charger

Having a roadside assistance number doesn't help if you can't make the call. The report showed that a third of road trippers don't keep a cell phone charger in their car. Keep a charger handy so your phone doesn't run out of juice when you need to make a vital call for help. You'll also need it if you plan on running the GPS on your phone.
