The 2022 Toyota Tundra is all-new this year. It has new powertrains, including a hybrid, updated styling, and a roomy interior. There’s a wide range of configurations with multiple bed sizes and cab styles and a choice of either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. Infotainment gets an update, too, with the debut of a whole new system for Toyota.

The 2021 Ford F-150 is also fully redesigned. It gets a new hybrid engine option added to an already extensive engine lineup and sees the addition of an available 12.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. Configuration options include multiple beds and cabs and a wide range of trims. Let’s take a closer look at these two full-size trucks to see which is the best.

A Trim to Fit Every Need

Pricing hasn’t been announced for the 2022 Toyota Tundra, but we do have the trim lineup. There are six choices starting with the base SR. Features increase as you move through the lineup with the mid-range Limited being the first trim to offer the hybrid engine. The top TRD Pro adds standard features for the off-road enthusiast.

The Ford F-150 comes in eight trims. The base XL has a more modest range of features while the mid-range Lariat and King Ranch have lots of amenities. The Platinum and Limited offer a taste of luxury, while the Tremor and Raptor are for off-roaders. More trims mean more choices.

So Many Powertrains

The Toyota Tundra has two powertrains. The first option is a 3.5-liter V6 with 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. There’s also a 3.5-liter hybrid V6 with 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. Both are paired to a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

The Ford F-150 has seven powertrains. The base engine is a 3.3-liter V6 with 290 horsepower. Optional engines include a 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 with 325 horsepower, a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 with 400 hp, and a 5.0-liter V8 also with 400 horsepower. There’s also a 3.0-liter V6 diesel, a new 3.5-liter V6 hybrid, and a high-performance 3.5-liter turbocharged V6. That huge number of choices makes the F-150 the clear winner.

Unmatched Tow Rating in Its Segment

The Toyota Tundra is a capable truck with features that make towing easier. These include multiple camera views and two tow/haul modes for handling light or heavy loads. The maximum tow rating for the Tundra is 12,000 when properly equipped. It can also manage a payload of up to 1,940 pounds.

The Ford F-150 comes in with much higher figures that put it at the top of its segment. Maximum tow rating for the F-150 is 14,000 pounds when properly equipped. It can also manage a payload of 3,325 pounds. If there’s serious work in your future, then there’s only one choice.

A Passenger-Friendly Ride

Trucks need to balance their capability with a well-mannered ride for passengers. The Toyota Tundra has a revised suspension system for 2022 that improves its ride, evening out rough pavement. There’s minimum road and wind noise as well, further adding to the passenger experience.

The Ford F-150 also delivers a comfortable ride. It’s relatively quiet without an overabundance of road and wind noise, even in bad weather. Although it’s a pleasant space for passengers, the Tundra does a better job of hiding road imperfections giving passengers a smoother, more relaxing ride.

Handling That Won’t Wear on the Driver

Trucks can be bouncy over uneven pavement, especially with an empty bed. Towing a heavy load can be equally unsettling, which is tough on the driver. Both the Ford F-150 and Toyota Tundra aim to deliver composed controlled handling whether towing, carrying a payload, or driving with an empty bed.

This year, the Tundra gets a revised suspension system that has a new multi-link rear suspension with coil springs instead of leaf springs. It not only delivers a smoother ride, but it also delivers a more controlled ride. While the F-150 has a good handling, the Tundra has less bounce over rough surfaces making it easier on the driver.

Ready for Off-Road Fun

The Toyota Tundra off-road trim is the TRD Pro. It has an off-road suspension with a 1.1-inch lift, 2.5-inch Fox internal bypass coil-over shocks, rear remote reservoir shocks, a front stabilizer bar, electronic-locking rear differential, and aluminum front skid plate. Many of these TRD features are also available in options packages on other trims.

The Ford F-150 has the Raptor as its top off-roader. It includes heavy duty skid plates, steel bumpers, sport-tuned front and rear Fox Racing Shox, five-link rear suspension with extra-long trailing arms, 24-inch coil springs, electronic-locking rear differential, and three off-road specific drive modes. The Ford F-150 Raptor is designed to handle more aggressive off-road driving conditions.

A Luxurious Interior With Truck Capability

Truck interiors were once modest and utilitarian, but today’s trucks make passenger comfort a priority. The Toyota Tundra has an attractive and nicely appointed interior with quality trims throughout. Vibrant color options and available leather seats, wood trims, and heated and ventilated seats create an upscale look and feel.

The Ford F-150 also has luxurious interior options that create a stunning first impression. It looks like a luxury truck earlier in the trim lineup and has top trims that are more well-equipped than what you’ll find in the Tundra. Especially in the Platinum and Limited trims, the Ford F-150 sits firmly in luxury territory.

All-New Infotainment With a Larger Screen

Infotainment is an increasingly important feature of any vehicle. The F-150 has a standard 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Wi-Fi connectivity for up to 10 devices covering a 50-foot radius. Top trims get a 12-inch touchscreen that makes the system easier to use.

An all-new infotainment system makes its debut in the Toyota Tundra. It has a standard 8.0-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 3 USB ports, and Wi-Fi connectivity. A 14.0-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, and a 12-speaker JBL audio system are optional. The system also accepts voice commands using natural language and does exceptionally well understanding those commands. This gives the Tundra the edge.

Excellent Standard Safety Features

Standard safety features for the Toyota Tundra as a part of Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 (TSS 2.5) are extensive. There’s pre-collision with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, road sign assist, full-speed dynamic radar cruise control, and automatic high beams. Parking brake support with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard.

The Ford F-150 offers standard automatic high beams, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, curve control, and roll stability control. Additional features including rear-cross traffic alert, front and rear sensing system, and lane-keeping system are available. For its wider offering of standard features, the Tundra wins.

And the Winner Is…

These trucks both have a wide range of features from infotainment to safety, along with a solid trim range. While the Tundra has a better infotainment system, more standard safety features, and a nicer ride and handling, it can’t beat the capability of the F-150.

The F-150 has more off-road prowess, a wider range of configurations and engines, and higher towing and payload ratings. This makes it a more versatile choice that fits most every need, whether it’s family life, the workday, or a weekend off-roading.
