The number of options when it comes to electric vehicles is steadily increasing. Most of those options are sedans or SUVS, but now there are electric trucks, too. The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is all-new, reviving a name that once belonged to gas-guzzling SUVs. Now, it’s a powerful and capable electric truck with a few off-road features you won’t find anywhere else.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning adds to the F-150 lineup with a range of all-electric trucks. It’s available in four trims with multiple battery options and impressive capability. Let’s take a closer look at these two electric trucks to see which is the better of the two.

A Matter of Affordability

The Ford F-150 Lightning is available in four trims. The base Pro is $39,974 and the XLT comes in at $52,974, which make both relatively affordable options. The Lariat is priced at $67,474 with the Platinum coming in at $90,874. High demand means you could be waiting awhile no matter which trim you choose.

The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1, which went on sale last fall and is sold out, started at $110,295. Reservations are open for the EV3X at $99,995 with fall availability. The EV2X comes next spring for $89,995 with the EV2 at $79,995 arriving in 2024. Even the most affordable Hummer EV is priced higher than all but the top trim of the F-150 Lightning.

Exhilarating Performance

The Ford F-150 has either a standard- or extended-range battery. The standard-range battery delivers 452 horsepower while the extended-range battery comes in with 563 horsepower. Both have 775 lb-ft of torque.

The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 has up to 1,000 horsepower with 11,500 lb-ft of torque. Its unique WTF (Watts to Freedom) launch control sends you from 0-60 mph in about 3 seconds. The EV3X is set to arrive with up to 830 horsepower with the same torque. Those numbers are far higher than what the F-150 Lightning offers.

Power Your Home With Your Electric Truck

The Ford F-150 Lightning performs a nifty trick that other electric vehicles can’t manage. It needs to be plugged in and charged, as you’d expect, but it can also send power the other way and be used to power your home. If the power goes out, instead of drawing power for its battery, it becomes your home's power source for up to three days.

If you’re more conservative about how you use that power, then it can power your house for up to 10 days. Note this only applies to models with the extended range battery. If you are concerned about power outages, then the Ford F-150 Lightning can help.

Charge Up and Go

The Ford F-150 Lightning can use Level 2 or Level 3 DC fast chargers. The standard-range battery adds about 41 miles of charge in 10 minutes at a 150 kW fast charger. The extended range battery adds about 54 miles in the same time.

The GMC Hummer EV can also utilize Level 2 or Level 3 DC fast charging. The Edition 1 adds about 100 miles of range in 12 minutes at a DC fast charger. That’s nearly double the range with just two extra minutes of charging. The GMC Hummer EV will have you charged and on your way more quickly.

Luxurious Interiors

The F-150 Lightning has a more modest interior in its base trims with either vinyl or cloth seating surfaces, but those trims are also much more affordable. Once you reach the top trims, where pricing gets close to the Hummer EV, the interiors are luxurious and beautifully appointed.

The GMC Hummer EV is a luxury truck that doesn’t have a more affordable, modestly equipped trim for those on a budget. It’s beautiful and comfortable with quality materials and premium trims throughout, in line with its price. Despite its luxury pedigree, the top Platinum trim of the F-150 Lighting is richer and more luxurious.

What Kind of Range Is Offered?

The Ford F-150 Lightning has a choice of two batteries. The standard-range battery offers a range of 230 miles, while the extended-range battery increases that number up to 320 miles depending on the trim.

The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 has a 329-mile range but is no longer available. The upcoming EV3X is expected to have over 300 miles of range. The EV2 comes in even lower with 250 miles per charge. The spread here is close, but we give this one to the F-150 since its extended-range battery has a higher range than what will be available from the Hummer EV.

Towing and Payload Ratings

The Ford F-150 Lightning can manage a payload of up to 2,235 pounds with a maximum tow rating of 10,000 pounds. Need even more room for stuff? The Mega Power Frunk under the hood offers another 14.1 cubic feet of cargo room and a max payload rating of 400 pounds.

The GMC Hummer EV has a maximum tow rating of 7,500 pounds and a maximum payload rating of up to 1,300 pounds. It also has a frunk with 11.3 cubic feet for cargo. Those numbers are far short of what the F-150 Lightning offers.

Can You Crab Walk?

Both of these trucks are capable off-roaders, but the GMC Hummer EV has a feature called Crabwalk, which you won’t find on other trucks. If you’re imagining this quite large truck driving sideways, then you have a pretty good idea of how it works.

It let’s the truck drive almost perpendicular, just like a crab. This isn’t something you’ll likely need while driving on pavement, but it could come in handy in tight off-road situations where there’s not a lot of room to maneuver. We give the Hummer EV the win for off-roading thanks to this innovative feature.

Infotainment With All the Right Features

The GMC Hummer EV has a 13.4-inch touchscreen with high-quality graphics that add superior visual appeal. This Android-based system is powered by the Unreal Engine used in video games and it makes for an exceptional user experience. The displays as you change drive modes are mini-movies and there’s both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The Ford F-150 Lightning has a 12.0-inch touchscreen on base trims with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 4G LTE wi-fi connectivity, and navigation. The top two trims get a 15.5-inch touchscreen. It’s a great system with intuitive menus, but it doesn’t match up to the experience offered by the Hummer EV.

And the Winner Is…

There’s a lot to like about these two electric trucks, but there are big differences between the two. The GMC Hummer EV is a luxury offering with a limited range of trims and a much higher price point. It offers graphics for its infotainment system that put it above the competition, and it has incredible power along with unique off-road capability.

The Ford F-150 Lightning, however, comes out ahead. It’s more affordable, has higher payload and towing ratings, and offers a more luxurious top trim. It also let’s you turn the tables and power your home with your truck if the grid goes down.
