GM CEO Mary Barra revealed that the automaker's luxury brand would introduce two sophisticated new technologies for the 2017 model year, including both "vehicle to vehicle" (V2V) communications for the 2017 Cadillac CTS and Super Cruise autonomous-driving functionality for an all-new Cadillac flagship.

According to Barra, who provided the keynote address at the recent Intelligent Transport System World Congress in Detroit:  “A tide of innovation has invigorated the global auto industry, and we are taking these giant leaps forward to remain a leader of new technology. We are not doing this for the sake of the technology itself. We’re doing it because it’s what customers around the world want. Through technology and innovation, we will make driving safer.”

For the 2017 Cadillac CTS, that means V2V capabilities that will allow the car to share key information—like speed, location and direction of travel—with other properly equipped vehicles that are also on the road. The cutting-edge system aboard the 2017 Cadillac CTS then will be able to analyze the incoming data to support already-exisiting protection technologies like forward collision warning.

Meanwhile, the Super Cruise system is expected to debut on a yet-unnamed model that will join the 2017 Cadillac CTS at dealerships in a couple of years. Representing a major advance over today's adaptive cruise control technology, the Super setup, per GM, "is designed to increase the comfort of an attentive driver on freeways, both in bumper-to-bumper traffic and on long road trips."

Added Barra: "Advancing technology so that people can more safely live their lives is a responsibility we embrace."

As for the current-gen Cadillac CTS, Motor Trend's 2014 Car of the Year and itself no slouch in the technology department, it’s on sale now with an MSRP that opens at $45,100.
