KBB.com 2003 Buick LeSabre Overview

The Ultimate American Cruiser

The American family sedan has taken many roads over the years and though its design and shape have changed numerous times, its mission has always remained the same; transport the family and their belongings in complete comfort and safety. The Buick LeSabre has always been a strong seller in this class and it has outlasted most of its domestic rivals—including its own sister vehicle, the Oldsmobile 88. The LeSabre has managed to keep a rather large and loyal following by offering a combination of value, quality, luxury and style. For 2003, Buick is celebrating the LeSabre's achievement as the best-selling full-size car for ten years running with a special "Celebration Edition" which joins the Custom and Limited models.

The Le Sabre is a big car. It has a passenger cabin that can accommodate 6 persons and a trunk that can swallow hefty amounts of cargo—including four golf bags, should that be an issue for you. The Le Sabre is a front-wheel-drive vehicle and that makes it ideal for those who live in areas where they have to brave snow-covered roads on a regular basis. The Le Sabre also comes with additional road-griping equipment such as GM's StabiliTrak and safety and convenience features like OnStar and front side-impact airbags. New for this year is the option of XM satellite radio. For a small monthly subscription fee, XM radio brings you over 100 commercial-free music choices and unlike AM or FM radio, XM radio goes wherever you go—from coast to coast—without a loss of signal.

The LeSabre is a sharp looking car, sharing many of the same styling characteristics as the luxury-level Park Avenue. Even the base LeSabre Custom has an elegant appeal that defies its low base price. All LeSabre models come very well equipped and include standard air conditioning, AM/FM stereo with cassette, PASS-key III theft deterrent system, power door locks, power windows, overhead console, keyless entry, cruise control and a tilt steering wheel. The Limited model includes all of these features in addition to dual-zone climate controls, leather seating, steering-wheel mounted audio controls, auto-dimming rear view mirror and universal programmable three-function garage door opener.

The LeSabre's tall doors allow easy entry and exit for both front and rear passengers, though once inside, you may have a hard time convincing anyone to leave. The LeSabre's interior is a comfortable blend of traditional American luxury and European-inspired design. The dash is simple yet elegant, placing all the instruments up high and close to the driver for ease of operation; a single strip of wood trim runs beneath them and is mimicked on the door panels. You have your choice of a 55/45 split bench seat (the passenger-side seat is slightly wider than the driver's seat) or bucket seats with a center storage console. The LeSabre's tall green house provides excellent visibility in all directions, though the high rear deck does make it a bit difficult to figure out where the rear bumper is when backing up. Once in motion, the LeSabre's vault-like structure seals out almost all exterior noises. The ride is designed to favor comfort and you'll feel little as the LeSabre seems to float over bumps and road imperfections. Of course, some road feel and handling is sacrificed to achieve this ride, but the LeSabre is not known for its prowess at the slalom track and most of those who buy LeSabres are quite happy with the balance Buick has struck between ride and handling.

The venerable 3800 V6 engine provides power for the LeSabre. This power plant produces 205 horsepower and can move the LeSabre briskly from a standing stop; more remarkable than its power is the V6's fuel economy rating of 29 miles per gallon on the highway. When combined with a 18 gallon fuel tank, the Le Sabre has a cruising range of over 500 miles, which is good, because this car was built for long cruises over vast expanses of highway.
