Pros: Great sound, handling, passenger comfort
Cons: Poor execution of technology
Advice: Don't trade in your old BeemerVery disappointed after the long wait for the new '7'. Moreover, difficult to comprehend the slow response from BMW to software problems. Don't get the comfort seat package unless you are prepared for the headrest to automatically rise to max height when you adjust seat forward; a true safety issue for visibility and crah protection . Front console reduces legroom. Doors (740i) do not open wide enough. Don't plan on keeping owners manual in glove box. It is too large Forget viewing i-drive screen with sunglasses. Forget the i-drive. Just because you can do it doesn't mean you have to. Don't turn in your old phone unless you can manage the new one don't expect the SOS and voice activation features to work without BMW phone. If you use the i-drive, be prepared to steer mainly with your left hand. But you probably will avoid it anyway. The knobs are more natural. Avoid valet parking even with the pad of instructions included. The liability is too high. Seat memory and control located on center console so be prepared to squeeze in after another driver has adjusted seats and locked the doors. Color coding the assortment of stalks may help. Zenon lights not standard? Be careful selecting packages. Be prepared to take some time off to learn i-drive and what an unattractive controller knob. Car was released too soon for dealer support. Interior finish, leather trim, sliding floor mats(again), etc., below BW standards. Great sound system-best enjoyed in the security and safety of your garage. Beware the recalls and invest in a gas station. Acceleration problems and 'sticky' electronic pedal. And know you are not alone. You can always call for help if the phone is working.
Pros: the climate control
Cons: the transmission at slow speeds ,especially in traffic.
Advice: Check for defects and have them resolved before taking delivery.A great car, though it has a few nagging problems that are difficult to resolve. For example, my vehicle is very shifty at slow speeds or going down hill. It appears that the gear is trying to adjust itself all the time or the fuel is not flowing well. The dealership are still battling with the problem, after 3 months. it is also annoying that the language options for the I drive are restricted to 3 and for me to get english, I have to wait another 2 to 3 months since the garage does not have the programme to add the language.
Pros: I Drive
Cons: The rain sensor wipers do not work very well
Advice: Buy the carThe 745 BMW is by far the most advanced automobile I have ever driven.
Pros: Fantastic sound system
Cons: Too many issues that BMW knew about that were not fixed prior to delivery.
Advice: Make sure the above issues are addressed and the issue around the remote door opener is resolved. It is unacceptabe that BMW is not addressing these issues in a timely manner.I purchased the 745I a week ago drove it 50 miles and it is still in the shop. Throttle problem, navigation system recall, software problem with the phone, instrument panel for speedomemter is not calibrated correctely for miles-the lines for mph line up with kilometers. I am sure it will be a great car but not a great start!
Pros: the i-drive(fairly intuitive but take your time learning all the features)
Cons: owner's manual(lost something in the translation!)
Advice: If you test drive it you will probably buy itI've had the car for two weeks and I keep finding something new to appreciate every time I drive it. I looked at Lexus and Mercedes but if you want luxury AND performance the 745 is only choice imho. Engine has loads of power(325 hp; 0-60 in 5.9) and torque. Handling is truly amazing--drives like a 3-series despite its larger size/mass. The motorola cell phone(BMW logo version of StarTac) is well integrated and can be used as a portable when you leave vehicle. Other electronics/toys are too numerous to describe but add to the 'grin factor'. Originally I was put off by the rear-end styling, but it has really grown on me. BMW broke a lot of pardigms with this car but I think they set a new standard for luxury cars.
Pros: the sound system
Cons: having to reach my destination
Advice: quality=service=valueThis is the 'ultimate driving machine' experience! As a former owner of a 1993 325 SI, I was more than impressed in the quality of not only the 745i, but also the superb quality of service received at the dealership!
Pros: Embarassed to say, seat massager (but not seat back!) and those shades.
Cons: weight, iDrive & voice implementation (I'm in Silicon Valley)
Advice: Get luxury seats, convenience pkg., & shades. Park distance system a toy. 19' wheels are ok.I took delivery February 26 so I do not have a lot of hours in it as of yet. First impression is 'it's ok'. Not great, not bad. My expectations were a bit higher through all the hype. Definite plusses include greater efficiency of the engine, active stabilizers, quiet ride, and gotta love those electric side & rear sunshades. The bummers include lousy iDrive integration with phone & nav, slow or stumbling go from a standstill, with or without the auto park feature, mediocre voice activiation system, a sorely lacking back or escape key by the iDrive knob, and a turning radius akin to my last Jag Vanden Plas, limoesque.
