We like the 2014 BMW 4-series coupe, which replaced the 3-series coupe as part of a shift in BMW's nomenclature. And we knew it would only be a matter of time before BMW introduced a droptop complement, to please both summer suntanners and lucky West Coast commuters.

Today, the curtains have lifted, and BMW has unveiled the 2014 4-series convertible. From the looks of it, the 4-series convertible -- which we will know as the 428i and 435i, respectively -- will pose a threat to style-conscious droptops in the segment.

Before we have the chance behind the wheel of BMW's latest tanning machine, read on to find out the four things you need to know about the 4-series convertible.

2014 BMW 4-Series Convertible: What's New

The 4-series convertibles due for the United States will use the familiar 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine that already appear in 3-series sedans and 4-series coupes. A six-speed manual transmission and an eight-speed automatic transmission will be available with both engine variants. Those wishing for even more power, however, should hold out for the forthcoming M4 convertible.

...and outside. The 4-series coupe and convertible are larger in almost every way than the vehicles they replace, offering supposedly greater interior comfort for all passengers. The 4-series convertible is one of few droptops that continue to offer a full-size backseat.

Thanks to the popularity of the outgoing 3-series convertible's hardtop, all 4-series 'verts will feature one exclusively.

The 4-series convertible will be offered in a number of trim "lines," including Luxury, Modern, Sport, and M Sport. We're particularly fond of the Sport trim's blackout grille and black-and-red interior accents.

Check back with Autobytel when the 2014 4-series convertible makes its official public debut at next month's Los Angeles Auto Show.
