BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program

The BMW Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program was established in order to allow BMW dealers to sell high quality used vehicles alongside their new models. Through the implementation of a detailed inspection and selection process for each CPO BMW vehicle, the brand is able to offer solid warranty coverage and added value to its inventory of previously-owned automobiles.

BMW’s CPO selection process starts out by narrowing down candidates based on their overall condition and mileage. Specifically, a car must be at least six months old and have 6,000 miles on the odometer in order to qualify for the BMW Certified Pre-Owned program. At the other end of the scale, an automobile can’t have traveled more than 60,000 miles in total if it wants to be included under the CPO banner.

BMW also runs each vehicle’s VIN through the CARFAX vehicle history report system, in order to get a thorough understanding of the automobile’s title and insurance status. Any indications that the vehicle had been heavily damaged and then repaired, or been involved in a fire or a flood instantly disqualifies that automobile from further CPO consideration. The same applies to cars which have ever been stolen or declared salvage, or vehicles which display odometer irregularities.

Each CPO BMW must go through a thorough and exhaustive inspection by highly trained BMW technicians prior to making it to the showroom floor. The inspection examines every single aspect of a vehicle’s mechanical and functional status, replacing or repairing any parts or systems that are not performing up to par. A Certified Pre-Owned BMW must also look as good as it did the day it was first built, and so the interior and exterior are cleaned and reconditioned in order to bring them up to spec. BMW technicians also perform any necessary maintenance that might be required on the vehicle. The inspection process is rounded out by a test drive that validates the automobile’s ability to perform up to BMW’s expectations.

All BMW Certified Pre-Owned vehicles are provided with a two-year / 50,000 mile limited warranty that begins as soon as the automobile’s original new car warranty expires. Effectively, this gives all CPO participants a six-year / 100,000 mile warranty that begins on the date the vehicle was first put into service. The limited warranty offers comprehensive coverage that takes care of any issues relating to the majority of the automobile’s systems and mechanical components.

BMW also extends a CPO vehicle’s free roadside assistance coverage by two years, with no limit on the mileage. BMW Certified Pre-Owned roadside assistance is available 24-hours a day, every single day of the year, and includes all of the standard features such as flat tire assistance, fuel delivery and battery jump-starts. BMW will also help with any lock-outs and tow the automobile to the nearest BMW service center if it can’t move under its own power. Reimbursement for these types of expenses is limited to $100 per incident. An Emergency Valet component of the BMW roadside assistance package helps to arrange for alternative transportation in the event of a vehicle breakdown, and computerized trip routing and itinerary services are also included. Finally, BMW offers trip interruption reimbursement of up to $1,000 in order to pay for lodging, food or transportation needs if a CPO BMW leaves its owner stranded.
