KBB.com 2001 Audi A8 Overview

Audi's full-sized sedan, the A8, is a little known entity in the luxury car class, which is a crime because it really is a stunning automobile. If the $60K plus price tag is not a deterrent for you, then take this one for a test drive. You will fall in love with its timeless styling, impressive power and confident road handling.

There are so many things about the A8—and its stretched version, the A8L—that set it apart from the rest of the luxury pack. To begin with, its entire body and floor pan is made of aluminum, which provides the A8 with a strong, yet lightweight, shell. The standard Quattro all-wheel drive is another Audi trademark. This system gives the big A8 a decided advantage in both inclement weather and spirited jaunts through serpentine back roads. Its 4.2-liter V8 produces 310 horsepower and a more impressive 302 ft.lbs. of torque. What these figures mean in the real world is power: power to pass, power to pull and power to accelerate from a dead stop—and possibly the power to pick up a few speeding tickets, depending on how heavy your foot is. The one down side to the lightweight aluminum body is the potentially high cost of repairing it. Because the average body shop does not have the tools or expertise to work with aluminum, Audi has taken the extra step of placing special shops at various locations around the country to deal with whatever dents and disasters befall your A8.

The true beauty of the A8 lies inside the passenger compartment. Audi offers no less than six color combinations and a choice of two genuine wood trims. The A8—and indeed all the Audi cars—could easily be the benchmark for modern interior design. It's not just the high quality leathers and suede coverings that impress, but the attention to detail. You see it in the stitch patterns, in the shapes and textures of the switches and knobs, in the graceful art that is the dash and instrument cluster. The A8 nurtures your senses with such niceties as one touch up/down power windows, power rear-seat lumbar support, power-operated headrests, Bose sound system, three setting memory driver seat, electric tilt/telescopic steering wheel, side-impact airbag curtains, auto-dimming inside and outside mirrors and dual-zone climate control. Options include front and rear heated seats, heated steering wheel, 17-inch polished wheels, power rear sunshade, HID xenon headlights, a rear parking sensor and an onboard navigation system.
