How geeked are gearheads for the launch of the all-new 2014 Chevy Corvette? Well, consider: It’s a major event now that brand has unveiled a fresh design for the car’s iconic “Crossed Flags” emblem. Of course, along with a new-look logo, Chevrolet also debuted what will almost certainly become the new new thing in vehicle premieres. The division will sell a very limited number of tickets to the public for the official Detroit debut of the 2014 Chevy Corvette, with proceeds going to the National Corvette Museum.

2014 Chevy Corvette: Celebrating Flag Day

Chevy showed the new flag emblem for the first time recently at Road Atlanta, where Team Corvette had just wrapped up the 2012 American Le Mans Series (ALMS) season by taking home its ninth manufacturer’s championship, ninth team championship and eighth driver’s championship—all garnered during just the past 11 years. Uncoincidentally, it’s that kind of motorsports success that informs one of the key elements of the Crossed Flags logo: Its black-and-white checkered flag, which is then complemented by one bearing both the Chevrolet “bowtie” insignia and the French fleur-de-lis, in a nod to Louis Chevrolet’s family origins.

As for the revised emblem slated to appear on the 2014 Chevy Corvette, here’s the lowdown directly from Ed Welburn, GM’s vice president of Global Design: “The all-new, seventh-generation Corvette deserved an all-new emblem. The new Crossed Flags design reflects the character of the next Corvette. The flags are much more modern, more technical, and more detailed than before—underscoring the comprehensive redesign of the entire car.”

The design of the logo also is notably more V-shaped, providing a swept-back look that will better complement the Corvette’s new proportions.

This isn’t the first time the Crossed Flags have been fine-tuned, either. In fact, while the emblem has appeared in some form or another on all 1.5 million Corvettes that Chevy has sold, it actually had to be changed even before the first debuted. The original logo used an American flag on the left-hand side and the checkered flag on the right, but was modified according to the brand “Because use of the American flag was prohibited as part of a commercial property.”


2014 Chevy Corvette: The Detroit Debut

The 2014 Chevy Corvette will make its public premiere the night before the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) opens in Detroit, on Jan. 13, 2013, and you can be sure the launch event will be one of the highlights of the 2013 auto show season. But it’s not just the industry’s movers and shakers—and assorted media types—who will be able to attend.

GM, Chevrolet and the National Corvette Museum have teamed up to offer 150 enthusiasts the chance to come to Detroit to see the debut of the 2014 Chevy Corvette in person, with a special two-day package that includes two nights at a premium hotel, along with transportation to the Corvette reveal (on January 13), GM’s Heritage Center for a special tour, the Corvette’s Detroit auto show press conference (on January 14), and dinner.

The cost for Museum members is $1,200 for two people sharing a hotel room, or $995 for a single, and non-members have to pony up another $50 to get in on the action.
