About the 2014 Acura RLX:

Acura takes another shot at building a compelling mid-luxury sedan with the new 2014 RLX, which replaces the RL in the automaker’s lineup. Acura says the RLX is sized like a midsize car on the outside, while offering the comfort of a large car on the inside.

Model Lineup:

As with other Acura models, the 2014 RLX is sold in a standard level of specification that can be upgraded with option packages. Every RLX includes LED headlights, LED taillights, leather seats, 12-way power front seats, triple-zone automatic climate control, a power sunroof, passive keyless entry with push-button starting, and dual infotainment system screens with Bluetooth, Internet radio, and 10-speakers. Standard safety features include a multi-angle reversing camera, a Forward Collision Warning system, and a Lane Departure Warning system.

Optional Equipment:

Four option packages are offered for the 2014 RLX, starting with a self-explanatory Navigation Package that also contains AcuraLink mobile services. Next is a Technology Package containing a Blind Spot Information System, rain-sensing wipers, power retractable side mirrors, extra stereo speakers, and larger 19-inch aluminum wheels. This package also installs premium leather and simulated wood trim.

Premium audio components are included in the Krell Audio Package, which also adds rear and side window sunshades. Finally, the Advance Package provides Adaptive Cruise Control with Low Speed Follow capability, a Lane Keeping Assist System, a Collision Mitigation Braking System, front and rear parking assist sensors, ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats.

Engines and Transmissions:

Initially, the Acura RLX is offered only with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine and front-wheel drive. Sometime during the car’s first year on the market, a new Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) powertrain debuts, delivering greater performance and better gas mileage.

Until the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system arrives, RLX buyers make do with the 310-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6, which is equipped with Variable Cylinder Management technology designed to help conserve fuel. A 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is standard, and the RLX is equipped with a Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS) system designed to make the car corner in crisper fashion.

Fuel Economy Ratings:

In combined driving, the RLX’s V-6 engine returns 24 mpg. Ratings for the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD powertrain are predicted to improve on that number when they’re finalized later in the model year.

Safety Ratings:

As this model summary is written, the RLX receives top scores in the moderate overlap frontal-impact crash test and side-impact crash test, as conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Full testing had not been completed as this was published.

Technology Highlights:

In addition to numerous safety and infotainment features, the Acura RLX is designed to be a quiet car. From the noise-reducing design of the 18- and 19-inch aluminum wheels to the standard Active Sound Control and Active Noise Cancellation technologies, the RLX surrounds occupants in silence. Models with the Technology Package also get acoustic glass for the windshield and side windows in order to further hush the cabin.
