Given the fact that 11 previous models already had been selected to pace the Greatest Spectacle in Racing—and knowing an all-new generation car will debut in the fall—it’s no surprise to learn that the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will get the nod for this year’s running of the Indianapolis 500.  The 97th edition of the race is scheduled for Sunday, May 26, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“It is an honor to help inaugurate the all-new Corvette Stingray at the hallowed Brickyard and further the legacy between Chevrolet and the Indianapolis 500,” said Jim Campbell, GM vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “The 2014 Corvette Stingray’s performance was influenced by racing, making this prestigious assignment even more fitting.”

As evidence of Campbell’s claim, consider: The only thing engineers had to do to prepare the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray to lead a pack of racecars around one of the most famous tracks in the world was add “track-mandated safety features and strobe lights.” In other words, there was no need to adjust the car’s 6.2-liter LT1 V8 engine, which will delivers 450 hp and 450 lb.-ft. of torque fresh from the factory.

Of course, although engineers stayed hands-off, designers dropped some bold Indy 500 graphics on the car and adorned it in a Laguna Blue Tintcoat. It’s the kind of color that would sure look nice on a retail 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Pace Car Edition—although no one at the brand has confirmed such a thing would appear.
