2002 Volvo V70 - 2.4 M FWD
Pros: New roof rack feature does not require roof rails. You buy a Thule-made rack from the dealer for a very modest price ($130) that fits into special hooks in the roof recess, but it is strong and is rated to carry 200 lbs. Much more sleek and better.
Advice: I was ultimately offered a price about equal to invoice, with little to no haggling.I have the non-Turbo for being a non-aggressive driver wanting optimal mileage. Definitely the car is very modest with the power, but that suits me fine. Otherwise, car is quiet, smooth, luxurious.
2002 Volvo S60 - 2.4T A SR FWD
Pros: Seat memory linked to keyless remote.
Advice: Compare the list of standard options of the 2.4 and the 2.4T. You will see the 2.4T is well worth the extra money.I was suprised how well the S60 handled. My wife has a Mustang and this 'Family' car handles much better. The new body style is a big plus for Volvo. You can tell that Volvo takes a great deal of pride in their vehicles and they put a lot of thought into every aspect of the vehicle. This is a must see and drive vehicle.
2002 Volvo V40 - Base
Pros: Driving position is very comfortable
Cons: Entering the drivers seat is somewhat cumbersome
Advice: Test drive the same car that you are buyng. The car is very responsive, good power passing and switching lanes, quiet, excellent brakes, good visibility, controls are easy to get used to.The stereo system has a great sound.Going up steep hills and keeping up the speed was not a problem. In general I am very satisfied with my (2002) V40.
2002 Volvo C70 - HT A Convertible
Pros: The entire car
Cons: A heavy body lean in high speed turns.
Advice: Get the upgraded sound system, It is amazing! With the new C70, Volvo has abandonned the whole boxy look and accepted the sports car look; And they dont stop there. The C70's performance matches its looks. Sporting a 236 Hp, 2.3-L high pressure turbo-charged engine, or a 2.4-L 190 hp low-pressure, turbo-charged engine, this volvo is not your grandmothers car anymore. It performs well driving to school or going a thousand miles an hour down the free-way. The C70 I purchased came with an upgraded sound system, and I must say, it blows all others away. Many of the aftermarket sound systems don't even stand a chance. Well I believe I have said enough, but one last thing: I would recomend that you purchase this car.
2002 Volvo S40 - Base
Pros: Good performance, excellent highway gas mileage
Cons: Ride a little stiff for most Americans
Advice: Purchase the DSA--to enhance the safety of an already very safe vehicle.Pro: --Top-notch (four-wheel disc) brakes and stopping distances, the greatest safety feature of all. --Excellent turbo engine, with a torque peak at 1800 RPM. This means one can have sprightly performance without a lot of engine RPM and noise. --Five-speed adaptive automatic transmission, still not a common feature of cars in this class. --Excellent highway gas mileage, often exceeding 30 MPG (at average speeds of about 65 MPH); this is a result of the five-speed automatic and an engine that does not require high RPM's for good highway performance. --Quiet cabin, thanks again to the five-speed transmission and an engine that performs well at low RPM's. --Spacious trunk, along with the capability to fold down the rear seats. Trunk struts are separate from the luggage space, meaning one never has to worry about damaging or impacting the contents when closing the trunk. Cons: --A slightly stiff ride, particularly for most Americans. --Given the stiff ride, not particularly sparkling handling (but it is intended as a family sedan, not a GT or sports car). --Limited back seat space. --A.C. marginal at temperatures above the low 90's. --No manual transmission available, but I've found the five-speed automatic so capable that I really don't miss the manual anymore. Can be a pro or con: style of the car is rather mundane, meaning it blends in with the crowd even though it is not a very common car.
2002 Volvo V70 - XC A SR AWD
Pros: Space and AWD
Advice: If you don't really need the AWD, consider the T5 version.Very comfortable, spacious (especially for our dog). AWD is useful for back country driving in winter. A car I expect to own for a while. Could use bigger engine and more horsepower.
2002 Volvo V70 - XC A SR AWD
Pros: Steering wheel moves when you get in and out of car. Wheel, seat, side view mirrors are linked to 1 custom setting.
Cons: learning the radio
Advice: If the vectoring doesn't bother you, check out the other wagons.I have an 850 turbo wagon, fwd, and the 2002 XC shocked me in it's quality, performance, and handling. The 4wd overcomes the vectoring the fwd turbo exhibits when maximizing acceleration. I was surprised the XC only had 197 HP, versus the 222 HP on the turbo 850. Accelaration is smooth and it seemed as fast as the 850T. Quality is improved measureably, though the radio and temp controls take more than a couple mins to reorient.
