It was recently announced that for a fleeting moment Volkswagen was worth more then Exxon Mobil. Pretty interesting dynamics, an auto manufacturer looking to build fuel efficient cars worth more than the number one mega oil conglomerate in the universe.
Obviously VW is doing a lot right. But when I saw the first Routan commercial hosted by Brooke Shields, I wondered if the German automaker had lost some of its highly valuable marbles.
To digress for a moment. Released last month the Routan is the first VW MINI van to hit the road since the beloved microbus. Oddly enough the mini van is based on the same platform as the 2008 Chrysler Town & Country and the Dodge Grand Caravan as the result of an engineering partnership between the two manufactures.
I wondered where Brooke Shields fit into the mix and if the semi washed up mom could sell cars. It seems VW wants to be positioned as the car of the current baby boom.
I guess Ms. Shields remains appealing. The commercial drove large numbers to routanboom.com. The website is a VW micro site that features the Routan and their Baby Maker 3000. The technology lets you literally build a baby based on your picture and the picture of your significant other. It is really freaky. In addition to viewing what the computer generates as a facsimile of your own child, you can actually see what the result may be if you hooked up with for example Britney Spears of Tom Cruise. Obviously the site also hails the virtues and gives the full skinny on the Routan.
The results have as mentioned been positive. Word of mouth is spreading via the Baby Maker and drawing horded to view the Routan. Hey, I even got caught up in the frenzy to let you know all about what I saw.
