2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI: Video Road Test and Review
The Volkswagen Passat TDI is a unique entry into the mid-size American family car segment. The Volkswagen Passat TDI is roomy, comfortable, and easy on the eyes, but it’s the efficiency of its diesel drivetrain that will attract most buyers to VW dealerships. The Passat TDI is also very modern in terms of safety, offering side curtain airbags, forward and front-side airbags, electronic stability and traction control, and Intelligent Crash Response. The latter makes the car more visible and easier to exit in the event of an accident.
The Volkswagen Passat TDI is motivated by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that is rated at 140 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with this mill but VW also makes available a six-speed automated manual transmission. The traditional manual unit provides exceptional fuel mileage of 31-mpg around town and 43-mpg during city driving when paired with the diesel motor.
The Volkswagen Passat TDI starts at an MSRP of $22,775 and it includes standard features such as Bluetooth connectivity, heated leatherette seats, a trip computer, satellite radio, power windows and door locks, and an iPod interface. The TDI with Premium trim (MSRP $22,215) adds a sunroof and a touchscreen interface for its Fender sound system, while the TDI with Premium and Navigation (MSRP $25,345) installs a touchscreen navigation system, keyless entry and ignition, unique exterior trim accents, and fog lights.
