Getting firsthand information from an actual car owner is one sure way to get an idea of car performance once it leaves the lot. Autobytel features real consumer reviews that give the unbiased experience of a car.
Pros: The look...it is adorable....like a new puppy
Cons: The fact that you can't take it to your local machanic and have it fixed.....puppies pee on the floor.....
Advice: Become or marry a doctor or a lawyer first. This is a very cute car but it is a BIG piece. The thing has some many problems and you have to make an appointment with the dealer to get it fixed because no one can work on it. No one else can fix the stupid thing. I am selling it and getting a Toyota Carmy LE ASAP! But hey if are a millioniar and love the look go for it.
Pros: Overall appearance
Cons: Trunk lid that only opens slightly so one can barely put anything in it.
Advice: Stay away !Without a doubt the worst and most troublesome car I have ever owned. After having the 2000 Hardtop could not wait for the Convertible (2004). Numerous problems, which dealerships (now on #3) can never fix. Among them, electrical, windows never working properly, fabric on interior roof falling apart. Car has only 6,000 miles on it and has been in for service 16 times.VW Corporate Customer Service must be the worst in the automotive industry - better one should suffer than look to them for help. I am desparately trying to get out of the lease so I can do what I should have done in the first place - buy the T-Bird before they are gone. Yes, a Ford, but nothing can be worse than this VW. Cute though, I must say.
Pros: The roomy interior, the big dash and front window, and my moon roof!!
Cons: Having to buy premium unleaded gasoline - too expensive.
Advice: Great car, but test drive it really well. The GLX Turbo is fast and fun to drive, handles very well. I have only had my Bug for 2 weeks, but I love it so far!!
Pros: Love the 180 HP engine coupled with the 6speed trans and fat tires
Cons: The sport seats are a bit uncomfortable on my thighs during longer trips
Advice: Buy the latest model you can with the TDI or Turbo engine, try not to smile every time you drive itPicked up the car after finding it on Cars.com for $5k less than local dealers. Seeing it makes you want to smile, driving it requires plastic surgery to wipe the smirk off of your face. Wife and I now argue over who gets to drive. I looked at every level and model of Bug and based on other reviews here and other sites narrowed my search to '01 and later. The Turbo S just fell into my lap. Those 180hp, 17' tires, 6 sp trans, sport suspension and monsoon stereo make driving to work fun...going home more so. I test drove everything in the $10-15k range and after driving the Beetle I was hooked. Others may have better reliability ratings or be more practical but if you want to live a little, break out of the econobox and go drive a Bug. German ride and performance v. Japanese reliability and ho-hum design... Oh, and with the '02 models VW upped the bumper to bumper warranty to 4/50,000 so there you can have your cake and eat it too! Oh, if yours doesn't come with a CD changer...go buy a MP3 player, half the price and more capability with no instillation necessary. Highly recommend this.
Pros: Excelent on gas
Cons: Taking it to shop once a month
Advice: Dont buy oneliked they way it drove and the head room space was good as well
Pros: I love the looks, handling, and it's just fun to drive.
Cons: Fifth gear ratio is too low for highway driving.
Advice: If you can aford it, check out the 6 speed turbo.I bought my 2002 GLS 2.0, 5 speed in October of 2001. I have not had a single problem with the car. My only gripe is the need for a 6th gear. At 70 mph, the engine revs at about 3500 rph. A highway cruising gear that would produce about 2500 rpm would be nice. . I have always liked VW's, and based on this one, I would purchase another. Perhaps the bugs have worked out since 1998.
Pros: Attractive look
Cons: Always breaking despite being only two years old
Advice: Buyer beware--can't judge this book by it's cover!Where to start! I leased my 2001 beetle GLS for 39 months never expecting the enormous amount of problems that it would have. Now I know why it only had a 24 month warranty. Sometimes you have to press the trunk release a few times to get it to actually release. The gas cap got stuck and had to be repaired. The check engine light went on, i ignored it, it went off, then on , then off. Never did the car act any differently whether the light was on or off. When the sun shines, forget the visor, it provides no use in shading. Have a towel handy to drape over the window. Cup holders under the dash--nothing fits in them, good maybe for loose change. Little pieces just fall off for no reason. Superglue is a must accessory. Paint chips easily. Dents seem to form just from the wind blowing. Headlights needed replaced twice within two years . Don't say i didn't warn you!
