The Top Safety Pick+ club has a new member: The 2015 Volkswagen Jetta, which recently scored the highest possible grades in all phases of testing from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). And yes, that includes the small front-overlap test that has been the bane of many a vehicle evaluated by the Institute. Further, the 2015 Volkswagen Jetta also offers basic frontal crash-prevention technology, which is a requirement for full Top Safety Pick+ honors, as well as a blind-spot monitor with rear-traffic alert.

Said Mark McNabb, chief operating officer of Volkswagen of America: “The redesigned 2015 Volkswagen Jetta not only brings a sleek new design but also offers customers state-of-the-art technology, creating the ideal combination of Volkswagen design, performance, and world-class engineering. To have IIHS recognize the vehicle as a Top Safety Pick + confirms that our commitment to safety and engineering pays off in delivering a standout compact vehicle.”

That same commitment extends beyond the 2015 Volkswagen Jetta, too. The four-door models of both the 2015 VW Golf and the high-performance GTI are on the Top Safety Pick+ roster (when equipped with front crash-prevention technology), while the mid-size Volkswagen Passat is among those honored with the traditional Top Safety Pick award.

On the topic of size, consumers visiting the IIHS website should note that the Institute classifies the 2015 Volkswagen Jetta as one of the "Midsize moderately priced cars," even though it's priced and sized to battle the mainstream compacts. Looking at that latter crew puts the 2015 Volkswagen Jetta in a particularly positive light, too, since only the Honda Civic and Mazda3 can match the VW with the IIHS' "+" honor.

The 2015 Volkswagen Jetta is at dealerships currently with an MSRP of $16,895 and additional standard safety features like:

  • Electronic stability control
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Electronic brake-pressure distribution
  • Hydraulic brake assist
