    2004 Volkswagen Jetta

    My Lifetime Favorite

    Pros: Engine performance

Cons: Only one useable cupholder in front. They finally got that right a couple years later.

I've had a lot of cars in my life, but the Jetta 1.8Turbo is my favorite. Great handling. Spirited performance. Great both around town and on the road. At 100,000 miles it is rock solid. Total repairs beyond scheduled maintenance - zero. I average about 25 mpg in town. It has done as high as 35 MPG on interstate trips. The best feature of the car is the engine. It loves to rev. and the kick in the but when the turbo kicks in is a real treat. Not a dragster, but if you need to do a quick 40 -80 surge to merge in traffic you've found its sweet spot. Note the car is not the same with the 2.5, boat anchor. My son made that mistake. Nice car but no zip. My wife's TDI doesn't have as much zip either but averaging35 MPG commuting in the city, she doesn't mind.

2004 Volkswagen Jetta - GL TDI (M5) Sedan

Pros: Gas Mileage - I get close to 50 (get the stick shift model)

Cons: Suspension is not as firm as I'd like.

Advice: Test drive one, but when you do, take it on the highway and try the wonderful torque.

I'm a commuter, 80 miles a day. I hate my job, but when I leave work, I just love to drive VW car home! This engine was made for the commuter. It's not a race car getting up to speed, but once your going 60-75 mph, your right in the engine's sweet spot. There are gobs of wonderful torque. I get close to 50 mpg with the stick shift. The Automatic gets conderably less. Its kind of funny waiting in line at the truck stop to get diesel (thats where its usually the cheapest), but I'm OK with that. Not I fill my tank only once a week, and I have plenty of gas to spare for the weekend.

    2004 Volkswagen Jetta - GL (M5) Sedan

    Pros: Fuel economy

Cons: Seats aren't as comfortable as they could be

Advice: Compare and you will see the advantages of this car

This car has get up and go with fuel economy. I am a commuter and bought it solely for this purpose. It has good maneuverability at a low price. The safety features (side air bags) in the 2005 model were a great selling point and one more reason I chose the car.

2004 Volkswagen Jetta - GLS TDI (M5) Sedan

    Pros: fuel economy

    Cons: higher oil change costs

    Advice: Get the diesel.

I have been very pleased with this car. Fuel economy is great, I have averaged 42 city/highway combined. The 5-speed is fun to drive. The tdi is quiet and I've never had difficulty starting it in cold weather. Highly recommend heated seats for cold climates, the heater is not as fast in the tdi. Service costs more for the tdi, but is less frequent. I have had it for nearly a year with no problems or complaints.
