Pros: Great low-end torque of engine
Cons: Wish it had an independent rear suspension
Advice: The standard 15' tires handle fine, don't need noisy 17''This car is GREAT FUN to drive! It's 174 ft lb.s of torque @1950 rpm feels like a v-8 from the 1970's! (I ought to know, I have owned 5 v-8 1970's cars). The seats are wonderfully supportive, (all day comfort!). The standard cd/cassette stereo sounds excellent, (better than Acura, BMW, Infiniti, etc.) I have gone 135mph! (Would have gone faster, ran out of room). FEELS great, steering/brakes;doors shut better than Mercedes! Interior better than C320.
Pros: Diesel engine
Cons: maintenance costs
Advice: purchase extended warrantyOne of the most enjoyable cars I have owned. A superb high speed cruiser which can do a steady 100 MPH at about 3200 revs. Seats, clutch and gear shift are excellent as is the rooadholding. I sold it at 83,000 miles because of the exorbitant maintenance costs. Dealer wanted $1250 for timing belt, $1250 for new brakes. (VW does not machine the old rotors but uses new ones.) An oxygen sensor was $520. An oxygen sensor for my Minivan was 320 installed. Any time a diagnosis is needed, the minimum charge for using the computer is around $85 as compared with about 50 for american cars.A very satisfying car which is impossible to maintain economically. The diesel always ran sweetly and started in the coldest weather.
Advice: DO NOT BY Jetta that combined in Mexico -This car drives good BUT I got several very dangers problems in a first year: 1.Transmition was broken 2 times !!! 2.Stering well are jamming when you drive !!!! 3. Fuel leak.!!!(if it was not a diesel this car can fryer you on the road) 4.Several other problems that make you ....! 5. VERY POOR service. DO NOT BY Jetta that combined in Mexico - this is no advice - this is a warning. And OF COURSE VW DO nothing !!!
Advice: The Turbo engine is powerful, try before you buy one for a teenager!Smooth powerful engine, quiet but firm ride. Monsoon sound system is outstanding. Traction control works very well. The only change I'd make is the Cruse Control light should only illuminate when cruise is engaged, not just because the power switch is on. I would have liked the Trip Computer in the GLX, but I prefered cloth to leather interior.
Pros: The speed
Cons: The fact that I have owned it only a year and it has been in the shop six times
Advice: Don't do itI have this vehicle in the shop SIX times, I have owned it for one year. I absolutely hate my Jetta. The interior collects fuz and looks dirty all the time. The sound system is a monsoon system which you can not change out because the stereo is connected to your electrical system. I have had all the front end parts replaced. My stereo would short out when I would turn right. The coil went out while I was 40 miles from home. The beakes have been recalled. The coils have been recalled. My advice is DON'T DO IT!!! Buy Honda's I never had any problems with my five year old HONDA. I buy a brand new VW JETTA and it has been in the shop ever since. The shop manager knows me by name because I have been in so many times.
Pros: the speed
Cons: the cup holder blocks the radio and none in the rear
Advice: get the 1.8t and leather warantyits a blast to drive ... 50-130 feels the same its great i love this car ...
Pros: The windows can open from the outside. It is easy to handle on the city road and highway.
Cons: Many mechanical problems.
Advice: Do not buy a Jetta! I would never buy another Volkswagon. Many trips to the dealer will be necessary. The engines are very noisy. The windows had a tendency to get stuck. My radio stopped working and it had to be completely replaced. The brakes act weird. The car is very slow when shifting from park to drive. It is hard to clean. The paint gets scratched easily. The automatic version drives like a standard in that it upshifts like a stickshift, it upshifts roughly. In the summer, it releases grease from the door frame onto the car. Overall, I am disappointed with my brand new 2002 Jetta. I had ALL of these problems from when I drove it off the lot to five months after.
