    2004 Volkswagen Touareg - V6

    Pros: Interior appointments. Cargo space.

    Cons: Gas mileage.

Advice: Unless you live in the deep back woods or on a rocky outcrop in the desert, walk away.

I REALLY wanted to love this SUV! Honest. It’s not much to look at on the outside, I know, but on the inside, it’s a completely different story. I thought the cockpit was beautifully appointed. The seating incredibly comfortable. The sound system phenomenal. With the exception of the one major design flaw I found that requires you to remove the headrests before you can fold down the rear seat (what’s up with that??), the vehicle is just solidly built with great attention to detail. This vehicle had more bells and whistles than any other luxury SUV I test drove. The more time I spent with it, the more I fell in love with it, in spite of the $42,000 sticker price. But in the end, my heart broke when I saw the gas mileage; 15 city/20 highway. There's no way I could accept that. The salesman tried to make me feel better telling me about how well the Touareg is at fording streams and climbing over boulders in Utah. I heard about how well it self-levels climbing up and down steep, rocky inclines. Here’s a quote from Autosite.com “The numbers tell the tale. Angles of approach/break over/departure are 33/27/33 degrees respectively in air equipped Touareg's (vs. 28/22/28 steel). Ground clearance tops out at 8.3' in steel sprung VW's, while air versions can range from 6.3' to 11.8', depending on conditions.” Gee. How often will I need to know or use that? Hmmmm....never. Come on, Volkswagen, let’s get real. Are you building vehicles for the maybe 50 gear-heads nationally who religiously read Motor Trend and positively quiver over words like “torque” and “locking center differential?” Or would you like to start offering an SUV for the rest of us mini-van haters who’d just need to get around town while hauling kids and/or gear safely and while getting an acceptable gas mileage? And if it’s not to much to ask, how about it looking sharp as the Touareg as well. If you do, let me know. I'll be the first in line to buy one.

    2004 Volkswagen Touareg - V6

Pros: As close to an all purpose vehicle as anything on the market. Power, handling, capacity, luxury, you name it.

    Cons: No third seat.

Advice: This is a steal for what it is.

Drove all the contendors in this class and this one shines. It is luxurious and powerful. I have taken it off road and it was flawless. The air suspension is a real eye turner when you throw it into unload height in a parking lot and it eases down to 6 inches.

    2004 Volkswagen Touareg - V6

Pros: VW did their homework - lots of things but best=perfectly flat & gap-free cargo area

Cons: inside door handles are very small, can only lift latch by using two fingers, unnatural

Advice: Don't be scared of reports of the V6's power, try it out.

Love it! Attention to both style and detail, comfortable ride, a real winner! I drove the V6 both city and highway, to gauge concerns that the V6 isn't powerful enough. My opinion is that acceleration isn't great but is acceptable, and its worth toting the extra weight to get the saftey & stability. In all other respects this vehicle is a dream, and seems fairly priced.

    2004 Volkswagen Touareg - V6

    Pros: Everything, and the price

    Cons: Not a thing

    Advice: It's a steal

This is a superbly built, hugely capable vehicle, which overshadows all others in the luxury SUV class in terms of features, quality, comfort, convenience, and last but not least the best value to be had. A Cayenne at half the price, with better looks and an interior on par with the latest S-Class Mercedes and Lexus limousines, and none of the nagging quality control issues of BMW's X5 (I owned one, it spent more time in the shop than in my garage).

    2004 Volkswagen Touareg - V6

Pros: General Quality & 7700lbs towing

Cons: No nav system available for my model

Advice: Watch price and shop around

Great. It has better towing capacity than anyting thing else I looked at even a Toyota Tundra Truck.
