Getting firsthand information from an actual car owner is one sure way to get an idea of car performance once it leaves the lot. Autobytel features real consumer reviews that give the unbiased experience of a car.
Cons: Recieving my first door scratch!
Advice: Negotiate on the deal!!! They will come down in $I love my car!!! I never thought that I would say that but this THE best car that I have ever owned!! I am now a VW freak! And I am looking to buy another VW for my wife.
Pros: Turbo engine and the Monsoon sound system
Cons: Cup Holder position, rear seat cramped, plain looking car
Advice: Test drive one with a Turbo, you will be hooked. Front area is roomier than you would think. When I decided to trade down from a Ford Explorer to a smaller SUV my husband talked me into trying the GTI. After test driving it, plus the price for all the extra and std options, it was well worth the value. The 1.8 turbo engages early on giving the car a powerful feel. Living in Atl traffic going from 0 to 70 quickly is important. The 4 wheel disc eliminates the front dive in heavy braking. Visibility is good, handling crisp and exciting-sure footed. Nighttime instruments are beautiful. Although considered a subcompact the front passenger seat has more leg room than the Explorer. GTI's are to be driven. They are not just for the young but the more mature. This car brings the excitment of the road to the driver and passenger, yet still leaves the comfortable, roomy spacious front seating area. Rear seating is not too bad, but is cramped. Extra storage can be made by folding down the rear seats. With the sunroof open, windows down, buffing is minimal. Well designed, very pleasant. Would like to see additional after market options available to help jazz it up from being so plain. My second choice would be to purchase a Turbo Beetle-had we not gone with the GTI.
Pros: The look and the quality interior and sound system
Cons: The power. I think the performance of the engine grows on you as the engine ages. You have to give it time to break-in and not give-up after a few thousand miles of less poweful starts which is fustrating to some. (Applicable to stick drive)
Advice: Pick a color that you REALLY like and order it if they don't have it in stock. Choose the alternative to the beige velour. The other material availableOk...this is a great car despite it's cons that others have mentioned. As for the pros there are LOTS! The standards that you get with this car are non-standard with other similar sized cars. The interior is GREAT! Typical German standards, not the plasticky toy-looking interior. You can tell the QUALITY!! As for the gas mileage...I have NOTHING to complain about. I would say that this is a great car for dog-lovers like myself, as you can easily fit in a 80lbs pup with enough space
Cons: manual seat adjustment can be time consuming until you get it just right
Advice: Buy this car..you wont find one better for the price.Extremely smooth and powerful acceleration. I was going 80 before I realized it. I found it very quiet inside while driving, contrary to the professional review. Great car! Great features come standard whereas you have to pay for them in other cars out there.
Pros: Heated seats
Cons: Interior color (black shows everything) & cloth used on the seats. Very hard to slide in and out of the car.
Advice: Do not buy this car if you plan on having people ride in the rear seats. Very cramped space for a person. This is the perfect car for a single person.Drives excellently. Especially steady ride for such a small car. On the highway does not get blown around by the trucks. It just zips along. Fabulous fuel mileage. Keeps getting better with every fill up. I'm at 48.7 miles per gallon at present time.
Pros: The way it drives!
Cons: If I'm outside the vehicle I have to use the remote entry to access the rear hatch.
Advice: This vehicle matched my requirements plus it is a great pleasure to drive. You should give it a serious test drive. My adult daughter offered that this was a 'young man's car' but this old guy loves it anyway.I've had this car 1 month and it is a total blast! Tremendous acceleration and handling that compares very favorably with my SLK 230 and at less then half the price. I would recommend the 17' wheels both from an appearance and performance perspective. The Monsoon sound system is outstanding. The ride is quiet, very responsive, and I always have a feeling that the vehicle is firmly planted. This vehicle replaced my old Explorer and my original intention was to go with a small SUV. The GTI has more then enough cargo capacity and with the front wheel drive, I can handle most of the snow conditions I'm willing to drive in. In addition, I get better gas mileage then a mini-SUV with the added benefit of enjoying a 'pocket rocket's' attributes. I got all the options except the leather seats but that was a personal preference. Even loaded, the GTI was thousands less then a comparably equipped 4X2 Escape. I owned and enjoyed a VW Rabbit in 1977 and that car was why I considered a Golf/GTI. If my old Rabbit was the Clark Kent version, my GTI is definitely the Superman version and I'm really glad I've returned to the VW family.
Pros: Heated Seats
Cons: No door lock on passagner side
Advice: great little car, good mileage. Light in back on snow.(Keep full tank of gas, for weight)I have owned my Bug for 18 months. This winter I had two different accidents. The first accident a deer ran into the drivers door. The deer broke off my door handle, this caused me to be locked out of my car when I got out to inspect the damage. Reason being the doors lock when you drive a certin speed. You need to have the doors unlock when the car stops, or put a key entry on passagner side. My purse and cell phone were inside the car, and I had left the car running when I got out. My husband came with the valet key but we still could not get in. 2nd accident: I rolled my Bug over in the snow 4 times, Witnesses said I rolled very easy but caused NO damage as I rolled like a cue ball, drove car home afterwards and have drove it for a month since. Deer accident did more damage than roll over. Police said reason for no damage was the shape of the car.
