Getting firsthand information from an actual car owner is one sure way to get an idea of car performance once it leaves the lot. Autobytel features real consumer reviews that give the unbiased experience of a car.
Cons: 98% of the car
Advice: stay away unless you get a maxxed out warrantyThe new Beetle (not so new anymore I guess) is fun to drive, but you pay a high price for it in the long run. It is ironic that such a cool-looking car could have so many problems hidden beneath the surface. After checking out countless reviews from other bug owners, I have found that many have faced the same problems time and again. Pros: handles well, fun to drive, decent power, easy to park Cons: where to start...power window units have a tendency to malfunction and in some cases the glass actually shatters (mine did), transmission problems, car makes strange noises (come from the engine) as well as rattles from inside the cabin, 02 sensor causes the 'check engine' light to come on despite the fact that there is no legitimate problem, cup holders are like something out of a Kia (sorry), headlights cost in the neighborhood of 45-50 bucks to replace
Pros: The Audi-clone 1.8T Motor.
Cons: The back seat is a painful joke for American-sized consumers.
Advice: Buy one! Possibly the best inexpensive commute car I have ever owned. It handles well and has sufficient acceleration to appease this American V-8 afficianado. Interior room is fantastic in the front seats. I can fit my 6'2' 270 pound body inside quite easily and actually is a spacious as my full-size pickup. Fit and finish are superb for a car at this price range. No one could touch the number of standard features it includes at this price.
Pros: Appearance, gas mileage
Cons: The quality stinks
Advice: Save your money, don't buy oneI loved this car at first sight. Its the only car I have wanted since I was 14. Now its the biggest nightmare. I have been in the shop 14 times in 6 months. For all you folks complaining about light bulbs going out you should have the car checked for water leaks, my blinkers went out from water leaks. My car is a rolling fish bowl! This is the second VW I have owned and I will never own another. I am hoping the lemon law will make them buy it back.
Pros: the body style
Cons: full of problems
Advice: if you really want a Bug, buy a new one and get a max warrantyI bought a used 98 Bug, black paint black interior, and the first month or so was great. Now, however, the relationship has soured quite a bit. 1) computer problem caused the engine fan to run all the time, which killed the battery...this took 2 weeks to fix 2) driver's side window shattered inside the door panel, took a month to get fixed 3) latch on glove box is broken (not due to any kind of abuse) so now I can't use it 4) headlamps cost roughly 50 bucks to replace 5) some issue with 02 sensor causes the engine light to come on...then off...then on 6) car makes strange noises from both the inside and out
Pros: The safety ratings
Cons: The overall quality
Advice: DON'T BUY ONEI have owned the beetle since 99 and can't even begin to list all of the things that have gone wrong w/ the car. The cost to have them repaired is incredible. The dealer actually suggested that I purchase a new beetle b/c they've worked out those 'issues.' Not true. I'm a teacher and many of my students have newer beetles w/ the same problems. DON'T BUY ONE. I'm very disappointed in VW and hope to at least break even as I try to unload this piece of junk. The sad thing is that I really love the gas mileage, and the appearance. I had planned on driving it until it died which I thought would be many years away.
Cons: Lightbulb change requires car to go to service and pay at least $35.
Advice: 'Resistance is futile', just get it and make sure you try any TurboThis is a great looking car with a superb acceleration and fuel economy. It handles very well and has very responsive breakes. Great from seat clearance. From driver seat had to be replaced (still waiting to know if its covered under warranty) and had multiple problems with the Mass Flow Sensor (it had to go 4 times for service until VW resolved the problem).
Pros: The car handles quite well, ride is comfortable and it has a lot of get up and go. Styling is great
Cons: Sound system is OK, should come with CD player. Gas mileage is OK, would have perferred at least 35MPG.
Advice: Only owned the car for a month, it is a joy to drive. Can't provide any advise at this early part of ownership. I hope all of the problems have been resolved.Driven GLS and the GLX. Originally consider purchasing the GLS. Got behind the wheel of the GLX, that was it. The ride is slightly a little firmer but is still smooth and even better on a good highway. It corners well, the tires may not last long because of this. It seems like it runs easy at 80 MPH. The interior is layed out effectively and there is enough room the two of us. I really like driving the New Beetle, especially in the left lane.
