2002 Volkswagen New Beetle - GLS (M5)
Pros: I love the looks, handling, and it's just fun to drive.
Cons: Fifth gear ratio is too low for highway driving.
Advice: If you can aford it, check out the 6 speed turbo.I bought my 2002 GLS 2.0, 5 speed in October of 2001. I have not had a single problem with the car. My only gripe is the need for a 6th gear. At 70 mph, the engine revs at about 3500 rph. A highway cruising gear that would produce about 2500 rpm would be nice. . I have always liked VW's, and based on this one, I would purchase another. Perhaps the bugs have worked out since 1998.
2002 Volkswagen New Beetle - GLS TDI (M5)
Pros: Attractive look
Cons: Always breaking despite being only two years old
Advice: Buyer beware--can't judge this book by it's cover!Where to start! I leased my 2001 beetle GLS for 39 months never expecting the enormous amount of problems that it would have. Now I know why it only had a 24 month warranty. Sometimes you have to press the trunk release a few times to get it to actually release. The gas cap got stuck and had to be repaired. The check engine light went on, i ignored it, it went off, then on , then off. Never did the car act any differently whether the light was on or off. When the sun shines, forget the visor, it provides no use in shading. Have a towel handy to drape over the window. Cup holders under the dash--nothing fits in them, good maybe for loose change. Little pieces just fall off for no reason. Superglue is a must accessory. Paint chips easily. Dents seem to form just from the wind blowing. Headlights needed replaced twice within two years . Don't say i didn't warn you!
2003 Volkswagen New Beetle - GLS TDI (M5) Hatchback
Pros: individuality of its shape
Cons: cup holders
Advice: love it!Fun little car! Love it!
2003 Volkswagen New Beetle - GL T (M5) Hatchback
Pros: Fun to Drive
Cons: no CD player in dash
Advice: Buy it! The warranty is good, and you can't find a better car for this price!I drove many 4 cylinder new cars, and the New Beetle was by far the most comfortable, best handling of them all. The safety features are great (steel is GOOD!) and there is lots more room than i expected. I bought one, and love it so far! It has turned out to be the best value for its price range. The only thing that is slightly negative is that there is no option for an in-dash Cd player, and for VW to put in a changer is REALLY expensive.
2003 Volkswagen New Beetle - GL (M5) Hatchback
Pros: heated seats
Cons: too many rattles which is why I rated quality as lower/hard to reach seat belts
Advice: BUY THIS CAR NOW-HAVE FUN!!!Love it!!! 0-60 in no time flat! Seen reviews that say back seat is a joke. These people must not have gotten in the back seat. My two boys are 6' tall. They say they have plenty of leg room and head room and are comfortable. My daughter is 7 and tall for her age. She can almost stand up in the back seating area and is very happy with all the room back there. I am a very large woman and have more room than I have ever had in the drivers seat. The seat belt is even comfortable. The interior is laid out very nice and is roomy. I LOVE THIS CAR!!!
2003 Volkswagen New Beetle - GLX (M5) Hatchback
Pros: fun to drive
Cons: dealing with the '02 sensor', power windows were defective
Advice: I would buy a new one for peace of mindFun to drive, handles very well. Front seat is roomy and comfortable...also, I am over 6 feet tall and still have plenty of headroom. The backseat is cramped but that is to be expected. The trunk is small but you'd be surprised what you can make it hold if you simply try. Rear seat folds down in about 2 seconds, which allows you to expand the trunk space quite a bit. Cupholders are worthless, but the rest of the car is designed well and seems to be of quality materials.
2003 Volkswagen New Beetle - GL (M5) Hatchback
Cons: the miserable ownership experience this car caused me
Advice: avoid this carOuch. Where do I start. VW is going to like this review very much, but then again, I didn't like my Beetle very much, either. I wanted to like it, but after multiple serious problems and poor response from VW, I was over it. This car looks cool, seems quality enough on the inside, but once you take the thing home, watch out. I could bore you with all the things that went wrong on my Bug, but I won't. I'll keep it very simple: If you must have a Beetle, buy a new one. And purchase the extended warranty for peace of mind. Otherwise, look at Toyota or Honda.
