Getting firsthand information from an actual car owner is one sure way to get an idea of car performance once it leaves the lot. Autobytel features real consumer reviews that give the unbiased experience of a car.
Terrific Value! I am not a mechanic, but I do have 30+ years experience in manufacturing and assembly of construction equipment. Compared to other cars I have owned over the years, (including highly rated foreign makes) I consider this little car to be extremely well engineered, and for the price I don't feel there is another car that comes close in overall value. I've been driving mine almost every day for three years with NO problems, none, zilch, zip, zero! Dependable, loads of fun, and cute.
MOST UNDER RATED CAR! I get annoyed by all those who don't own a smart but profess themselves to be an expert. They feel that a "rating" must consist of comparisons with other cars which are obviously engineered, and made for an entirely different market. Do they really think the engineers at Mercedes are that stupid? I have owned my smart for three years and find it to be an exceptionally well made and dependable car, especially considering the price. I use my smart for 80 - 90% of my driving.
Pros: small size
Cons: it is slowoverall it is a great car for my needs and I have no complaints!
So ugly it is cute
Pros: read engine
Cons: missing guages on dash .. only fuel is presentI only have 250 miles on the car but it is fun with a capital F. 30mpg on first tank full with city driving and the A/C on. It turns a lot of heads and it puts the fun back in inexpensive driving.
Pros: It's cute!!
Cons: Bumpy RideThis is a great car for commuting and running small errands. It can actually hold a fairly large number of grocery bags or carry-on luggage plus totes for 2 people. The transmission problems some people report are probably because those people have never driven a standard transmission. It is very easy to get used to. The savings in gas compared to what we drove before is actually enough to make the car payment. My partner and I are large people and we fit inside quite comfortably. The only downside is that is a bit of a bumpy ride on secondary roads.
Pros: The MPG
Cons: The SizeIt runs great!
Pros: Convertable top and at 55 having all the girls looking at me again
Cons: Drink holders and the radio CD display should have temp and time incorporated instead of the tiny instrument displayI have a 79 Triumph Spitfire that I built from nuts and bolts. My Smart perform very simular to my Triumph. The fit and finish is exceptional, gas mileage is good enough (40 to 50 MPH depending on driving as a commute or driving like a sports car). I must say that the cornering at any speed is outstanding. Service is at 10k intervals and cheaper than any auto I've owned (ajusted for inflation) and no problems that have required warrantee service (13K miles on it so far). I have taken trips in excess of 600 miles and I have a BAD back, but it came through like a charm even going over the Calif. Grapevine pass. The one thing that keeps this car from a perfect score by me is the positioning of the drink holders which requires a downward reach over the shifter and is tough on drinks with plastic lids.
