Getting firsthand information from an actual car owner is one sure way to get an idea of car performance once it leaves the lot. Autobytel features real consumer reviews that give the unbiased experience of a car.
Pros: Exterior and Interior Styling
Cons: cup holders
Advice: Test drive it !Excellent car! Good value for your money. Get the 5-spd manual - good on gas. Looks great in and out. Lots of compliments! I just wished the engine was stronger but it's not bad after all. Handles great like a sports car, and very reliable!
Pros: Sport Trac AT automatic transmission is big fun, leave it in drive, or manually shift through the gears
Cons: Don't really have any negative comments, okay, maybe the console storage compartment could be roomier.
Advice: Try to think past the word 'cute'. This is a 'beautiful car' from bumper to bumperWhat a sweet little car! I spent a few months looking at other compacts, but kept coming back to this one. Nicely put together inside and out. Great price. I'm a big guy, 5'11' about 250# and I find this car easier to get into and out of than many bigger cars that I've owned. Big fun to drive, snappy acceleration and really quick steering, took me awhile to get used to it, but I adapted quickly and just love the way it handles, not to mention what a dream it is to park in a crowded lot. If you're considering a small sporty wagon, please don't hesitate to buy this one, it will put a smile on your face, especially at the gas pump.
Pros: overall build quality and sporty nature
Cons: 3300 rpm at 62 mph in 5th gear
Advice: lot's of fun in a small, nimble package! The Protege5 is a jewel of a small car! Very solid, well built and well appointed. Fit and finish is excellent and the feel of the leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter and the instrument presentation is top notch. You'll have lots of fun in the twisties with this car--it's peppy around town and handles extremely well. Down side is engine noise on acceleration plus only 130hp which means lots of busy rpm's on the highway.
Cons: NOT ENOUGH COLORS
Advice: GET ONEEXCELLENT
Pros: the handling is top-notch.
Cons: no electronic door-lock switch on the passenger side (kinda odd)
Advice: buy one, you'll love it.I bought my Protege5 after test driving it for a full day -- I didn't want to turn it back over to the dealer. True story. After 3 years in an Xterra, I was concerned about space and performance...the Protege5 is great. Has everythign that I need and want. Love the sunroof and the sport-shift automatic.
Pros: Power, Acceleration.
Cons: Major understeer, bad quality
Advice: Look at the Mitsubishi Lancer OZ before you buy one!Wow this car is fast. The Proto5 is great in speed and acceleration. The braking sucks though. Sterring is very responsive almost as good as the Lancer OZ edition. Styling is great on the outside. The quality is low in this Mazda with cheap interior materials and small minor glithes in my car such as inconsistent fabric stitching and loose rubber guards on doors. The left back door also has a slight sqeak. The Civic and the Lancer are much more superior than this Mazda in quality. Reliability seems average for this class of car. Features are fairly good. On second chance I would have gone with the better driving, less sporty, better quality Mitsubishi.
Cons: Buzzy engine
Advice: Watch for price and discounts but buy it.If you want one of the best handling small cars on the market, the Protege 5 is your car. Its somewhat boomy engine and moderate power is more than made up for in handling, room and comfort. It just plain feels connected and handles. Mazda knows handling and comfort and Fun.
