'03 Ford Taurus SES
Cons: Door locks do not open when you stop and put car in parkBest car I ever owned. Has a comfortable ride and is great on gas. Runs like a top. Bought it in '04 with 18K miles for $10,400 - less than half of the original MSRP. At this point, my total cost of ownership is way less than a comparable Honda, Toyota, VW, etc. Car has 84K miles and all I've had to do is regular maintenance. Had to change the starter last fall and I also decided to put in a new battery as a preventative measure before the winter.
Advice: Buyers beware. This vehicle was the worst car I have ever owned. I purchase the car in 2005 and in 2006 the alternator went out. In 2007 the transmission went out.
Pros: Power drivers seat
Cons: Automatic shifter on column
Advice: It's no ' BMW ', but, you're getting the same quality and most bang for the buck !Excellent quality/ workmanship at an honest/ affordable price. My test drive was as anticipated. Comfortable supportive ride, competent handling at high speeds, and in hard cornering situations, vehicle remained level. Smaller Vulcan engine, 3.0 six was no disappointment either, it had adaquate acceleration from a standing start, and was surprisingly fast on highway w/ a nice tone to engine when accelerating, and of speeds of 60 mph and higher. Highway acceleration was smooth, fairly quick, and no letting up, this engine can rev ! This vehicle was very easy to steer, and in doing so, you could feel the road and knew you had great control of the vehicle. Build quality was a plus, vehicle felt super tight/ solid. Interior is plain, but well thought out, no gimmicks or un-necessary toys to break, dash design is adaquate, controls easy to find/ read, well lite for night driving. Interior is roomy, comfortable/ spacious enough for 5 adults, 6 if need be. Power seat a plus on SE package. Great stereo system too. Exterior of vehicle still remains pleasing to the eye after a 20 year run, styling remains sleek/ somewhat sporty for a 4 door family sedan. My spouse has a 2003 Mercury Sable LS w/ the 24 Valve Duratec engine ( 201 hp ), an option for the '05 Taurus, great engine, much quicker acceleration than the standard Vulcan 6, however, without the option of traction-contol, the larger 6 would be too much engine for the '05 Taurus if you live in snow country, something to consider. Trunk space is fairly spacious, and on split bench seat with arm rest that converts to cup/ storage holder, this option is well thought-out, and works much better than bulky center consoles offered by most auto makers, that are more for looks than being truly functional and w/ a purpose.
Pros: cruise control
Cons: the radio being one big unit has made it impossible to put in an aftermarket head unit
Advice: its a very good reliable car that drives well in the snow2005 se.. it drive well, stopping leaves something to be desired, acceleration is good enough for what it is.all in all it is a good car would like to conssitaly break to 30MPG which may not be to hard with an after market upgrade or 2,being that it averages 27-29 per tank.we also have an eclipse and the taurus is very much smoother i know im comparing apples and oranges.other than the noisey valve trane under fairly hefty accelartion the is a quite running car and being a chevy man i can see myself keeping this for 100k+ miles.the e-85 is a nice option as well if it ever ends up being more than .05-.15 cents cheaper than gasoline.
Pros: Comfort and handling
Cons: center pulldown console
Advice: It is a good car for the money! The 2002 Taurus SES is the most comfortable sedan in its class. The ride and handling are great. The engine has plenty of pep and runs quietly. I average 24 mpg locally and 30 mpg on a trip. The air conditionaing is less efficient than some and runnning it causes me to lose 2 mpg. The only concern I have had is a rattle in the front dash area that cannot be found, and I now have over 70,000 miles on this car. Great car for the money. More than got my moneies worth.
