Chevrolet History

Chevrolet was founded by Louis Chevrolet and William Durant (founder of General Motors), in 1911. Durant had been forced out of GM a year earlier and sought to reclaim his title as a captain of the automotive industry. He found that opportunity with race car driver, Chevrolet, whom Durant had hired to drive Buick automobiles at promotional events.

In 1916, Durant was able to purchase a majority stake in General Motors, and Chevrolet was merged into GM in 1917. From that point on Chevrolet would remain the largest, well-known, and most successful GM brand. Chevrolet first used the distinctive bow-tie logo in 1913. The legend has it that Durant visited a hotel in France that had the symbol on wallpaper.

Chevrolet has introduced several iconic vehicles over the decades, including the Chevrolet Corvette in 1953, the Chevrolet El Camino in 1959 and the Chevrolet Impala in 1958 as a trim package for the Chevrolet Bel Air.
