Toyota has expanded the flexibility of its full-size Tundra pickup with the addition of the new Double Cab configuration. Long missing from the line, the Double Cab gives the Tundra line the ability to go one-on-one with the crew cab models from Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge and Nissan.
The Tundra Double Cab is offered in two trimsSR5 and Limitedand is powered by the Lexus-derived 4.7-liter 32-valve i-Force V8 engine. Modified for use in the Tundra, the i-Force V8 produces a healthy 240 horsepower and an impressive 315-lb-ft. of torque. Though not as powerful as some competitors, few if any can match the quiet, nearly vibration-free performance this engine provides. And with a 7100-pound tow rating (4x2 SR5) the Tundra Double Cab is by no means weak in the knees.
Optional four-wheel-drive is available on both the SR5 and Limited. The Tundra Double Cab uses Toyota's proven shift-on-the-fly electronic transfer case that allows you to choose between two-wheel drive, four-wheel high or four-wheel low with just the touch of a button. Off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the Tundra's generous ground clearance that ranges from 10.9 up to 12.3 inches, depending on the model and tires.
The Tundra provides one of the best rides you'll find in a full size truck. An advanced coil spring, double-wishbone front suspension gives the Tundra incredibly accurate handling as well as a tight turning radius. The Tundra Double Cab's solid rear axle and leaf-spring suspension is augmented by a set of staggered (one in front of the axle, one behind) low-pressure nitrogen gas shocks. This design helps stabilize the rear axle and keeps it from hopping and wobbling over rough pavement. For even better handling, you can opt for Toyota's Vehicle Stability Control and traction control option that electronically monitors and corrects for wheel slippage and understeer.
This latest version of the popular Tundra platform provides more interior room for rear-seat passengers yet when compared to the Tundra Access cab, suffers only a half-inch loss in bed length. At 74.3-inches, the Tundra Double Cab provides nearly 7-inches more bed than the new Nissan Titan Crew Cab. By stretching the Tundra's wheelbase a full 12.2-inches, Toyota has increased the cabin size by a wide margin. This increase has allowed engineers to provide 37-inches of rear seat legroom as well as to angle the rear seatback, making the seating position more welcoming to adults. Compared to the bolt-upright rear-bench seat found on many competitors, the Double Cab's rear seat is almost limousine-like in the comfort it provides. After an extended ride in the backseat, we can tell you that it's almost preferable to riding shotgun, especially if your Tundra is equipped with the optional ceiling-mounted DVD entertainment system. We think you'll also love the Tundra's power-sliding rear window. Reminiscent of old family station wagons, the Tundra's glass rear-window can be partially or completely lowered for maximum ventilation.
When not in use by passengers, the 60/40 rear seats fold and tumble forward, a design you might not find as space efficient as many of the Tundra's competitors. Trucks like the Nissan Titan and Ford F-150 have seat bottoms that fold up flush against the seatback, creating a large unencumbered space between the front seats and the rear wall.
Up front, you'll find a cozy set of captain's chair seating separated by a large storage console. The handsome dash is functional and provides twin 12-volt outlets plus numerous storage bins and cup holders.
Of course, Toyota has equipped the Double Cab with a long list of standard safety features including anti-lock brakes, dual front-seat airbags and front seatbelt pretensioners and force limiters. Missing from the list is any type of side-impact airbags, a feature offered on both the Nissan Titan and Dodge Ram.
Standard equipment for the SR5 includes 16-inch styled steel wheels, chrome bumper inserts, power mirrors, tilt wheel, cruise control, air conditioning and a six-speaker AM/FM stereo with CD. Limited models include all this and add fog lights, JBL three-in-one audio system, power windows, keyless entry, rear defroster, steering-wheel mounted audio controls and rear privacy glass. Options include leather-seating surfaces, power seats, heated outside mirrors, limited slip rear differential and power glass moonroof.
Beyond the comfort and convenience options, Toyota also offers the rugged TRD off-road package that adds 16-inch alloy wheels, an off-road tuned suspension with Bilstein monotube high-pressure shocks, front and rear mudguards, fog lamps and overfenders.
