The Toyota Land Cruiser has long been a mainstay of the brand's SUV lineup, but it's also been something of an outlier.  A rugged, full-size truck designed to conquer the harshest terrain imaginable, the Toyota Land Cruiser also sports an opulent cabin that wouldn't look out of place wearing a Lexus badge.  In short, the Land Cruiser is like no other vehicle sold by the Japanese giant, and as such it has gained a devoted following over the years from both adventure-seeking drivers and families looking for an ultra-comfortable daily driver.

In light of its recent refresh, let's take a look at 10 things you need to know about the 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser.

01. The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser Features Revised Styling

The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser doesn't deviate too far from the playbook that has defined the looks of the large SUV for the last two decades, but it does offer a number of tweaks designed to help keep the vehicle looking fresh and modern.  The conservative duds of the Land Cruiser are enhanced by a new grille (framed by LED running lights and revised headlights), as well as bulkier fenders at each corner.  More attention-grabbing, multi-spoke rims sit underneath the Toyota, and a standard rear spoiler helps to keep the rear window glass clean.  Bigger side mirrors and fresh splashes of chrome round out the exterior changes to the Land Cruiser.

02. The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser Provides Full-Size Accommodations

The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser is a big vehicle by any definition, and this size translates into copious amounts of interior room.  The Toyota Land Cruiser is capable of seating up to eight passengers across three rows, with the second row moving forward in order to ease access to the rear quarters of the vehicle.  Unlike most SUVs, the Land Cruiser's middle row of seats folds flat but those at the very back do not.  Instead, the third row folds up and away against the sides of the passenger compartment.  Doing so frees up 82 cubic feet of total cargo space, which is an expansion of the 16 cubic feet that are available with the seats in place.

03. The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser Delivers V-8 Power

The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser is outfitted with the most robust eight-cylinder available from the car company.  The Toyota Land Cruiser's V-8 displaces 5.7 liters and delivers 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to tow up to 8,500 lbs.  This output is managed by a standard six-speed automatic transmission that sends it to all four wheels via a full-time four-wheel drive system.  Fuel mileage for the behemoth checks in at 13-mpg in stop and go driving and 18-mpg during highway cruising, but in all fairness, this is not a vehicle that is purchased based on the merits of its efficiency.

04. The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser Comes With An Extensive Off-Road Pedigree

The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser builds on the desert-crossing, arctic-taming reputation of its predecessors.  The Land Cruiser's four-wheel drive systems features a locking center differential in order to better distribute torque during low-traction situations, and the SUV also comes with a Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System that can unlock the its anti-sway bars in order to enhance suspension travel and articulation.  Of course, in addition to its tall ride height the Toyota truck also comes with a full complement of skid plates designed to protect the more delicate aspects of its undercarriage.

05. The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser Features A Number Of High-Tech All-Terrain Features

The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser doesn't just rely on its solid construction and heaping amounts of horsepower to help it plough through off-road obstacles.  The Toyota Land Cruiser also offers advanced electronic and computerized features that are designed to give drivers an edge when tackling tough terrain.  The Land Cruiser's Crawl Control system allows drivers to dial in a specific forward speed via an interface mounted on the center console, acting as a sort of slowed-down cruise control that uses the SUV's brakes and throttle in conjunction to keep momentum steady and give pilots the freedom to concentrate on navigating the route ahead.  Low-speed turns are also enhanced by the Off-Road Turn Assist system, which uses the rear brakes to help the truck pivot and make the most of the limited space that is often a feature of tight trails.  Topping it all off is Multi-Terrain Select, which allows the vehicle's traction control to be specifically adjusted for use on five different surfaces.

06. The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser Debuts The Multi-Terrain Monitor

The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser also gives off-road drivers a helping hand when it comes to visibility.  It's hard to avoid an obstacle that you can't see, and the steep angles and awkward approaches found when driving far off of the beaten path can often reduce sightlines directly in front of and adjacent to the vehicle.  The Multi-Terrain Monitor feature installed in the Toyota Land Cruiser uses a grille-mounted camera to offer a wide-angle look at the ground ahead, overlaid with the predicted path of the vehicle's wheels.  Side view cameras found on the left and right of the Land Cruiser also provide a look at the area immediately to the port and starboard, along with sight lines provided 14 inches from the SUV to help drivers gauge the distance of a given object.

07. The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser Has Been Given An Upgraded Interior

The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser's exterior styling wasn’t the only aspect of its appearance to receive improvements for the current model year.  Inside, the Toyota Land Cruiser's passenger compartment has been given richer, shinier wood trim, which stands alongside a silver-faced gauge panel.  Chrome vents are also now found scattered throughout the Land Cruiser's interior real estate.  Both front seats in the Toyota are wrapped in perforated leather seats (with a ventilation feature), and although it might seem superfluous, the Land Cruiser has been equipped with an 'eco-driving monitor' that aims to help drivers reduce the vehicle's considerable thirst for gasoline by modifying their habits behind the wheel.

08. The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser Offers Improved Standard Equipment

One of the most welcome changes made to the 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser is the decision by Toyota to make every single previously optional feature part of its list of standard equipment.  Each version of the Land Cruiser is outfitted with four zones of automatic climate control, heated and cooled leather seats with power adjustment, 18-inch rims, HID headlights, a sunroof, adaptive cruise control, a touchscreen navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, the Entune multimedia interface, a JBL sound system, a heated steering wheel, and fog lights.  A DVD entertainment system for rear seat passengers, Smart Key keyless entry and ignition, power windows and door locks, and 12 cup holders are also included with the Toyota suv.

09. The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser Is Safe On or Off-Road

In addition to its enormous bulk, the 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser also features a number of advanced safety systems to keep occupants out of harm's way.  No fewer than 10 airbags are installed throughout the passenger compartment of the Toyota Land Cruiser, including dual forward airbags, seat-mounted side airbags for those riding up front (as well as in the second row of the SUV), and side curtain airbags that deploy along the entire length of the vehicle's passenger compartment.  Driver and front passenger are additionally protected by knee airbags.

The Land Cruiser also comes with electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, traction control, and a pre-collision system that uses the adaptive cruise control feature to reduce the SUVs forward speed should an impact be deemed unavoidable.  Finally, the Safety Connect feature found in the Toyota allows for emergency personnel to be contacted automatically in the event of an accident, as well as for stolen vehicles to be tracked remotely.

10. The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser Is The Most Expensive Toyota

The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser retails for an MSRP of $78,255, which makes it far and away the priciest option available from the automaker.  The Toyota Land Cruiser justifies itself as an expensive purchase due to its unique combination of luxury and off-road capability - a pairing that gives it few, if any peers amongst non-premium SUVs.  Even in the luxury segment there are no real competitors for the Land Cruiser when it comes to assessing eight-passenger luxury vehicles that can hold their own off-road.  Models such as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and the Land Rover Range Rover provide similar prowess, but seat only five.  In fact, the closest rival to the Land Cruiser might be its in-house platform-mate, the Lexus LX, which starts at a comparable MSRP of $80,930 but offers better brand recognition for status-seeking buyers.
