Performance: 2013 Toyota Avalon

Last year's 3.5-liter V6 engine remains the base engine option for 2013. This capable powerplant promises 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft. of torque. According to Toyota, these numbers are good enough to get the Avalon from zero-to-60 mph in less than seven seconds.

With a little retooling, this V6 engine is expected to deliver improved fuel efficiency over last year's model. Toyota predicts an EPA rating of 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. In comparison, the 2012 Avalon output 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Also new for the 2013 model year is a hybrid engine option. This comes in the form of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that mates to two electric motors. Combined horsepower is reported at 200 hp. Fuel efficiency is listed at an impressive 40 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway.
