Toyota has long operated under a more conservative styling philosophy when compared to competitors. However, the 2013 Avalon breaks with tradition a bit. Replacing last year's boxy, unassuming body style is a more attention-seeking vehicle that boasts a broad, pronounced front grille and sweeping roofline. Add it all up, and you've got a vehicle that has a more confident and individualistic design.

In terms of dimensions, the new Avalon is a bit shorter and wider than the outgoing model. Despite the shorter frame, both interior seating dimensions and trunk space are larger than last year. As with most large cars, those who find themselves in the 6-foot-and-over club will find plenty of comfort in both the front and rear cabin areas. Overall, the Avalon delivers an upscale environment that matches the $30,000+ base price tag.

Performance: 2013 Toyota Avalon

Last year's 3.5-liter V6 engine remains the base engine option for 2013. This capable powerplant promises 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft. of torque. According to Toyota, these numbers are good enough to get the Avalon from zero-to-60 mph in less than seven seconds.

With a little retooling, this V6 engine is expected to deliver improved fuel efficiency over last year's model. Toyota predicts an EPA rating of 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. In comparison, the 2012 Avalon output 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

Also new for the 2013 model year is a hybrid engine option. This comes in the form of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that mates to two electric motors. Combined horsepower is reported at 200 hp. Fuel efficiency is listed at an impressive 40 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway.

Safety: 2013 Toyota Avalon

Standard safety equipment for the Avalon is expected to include antilock disc brakes, stability control, traction control, seven airbags (including driver's knee airbag) and active front head restraints. Crash tests have not yet been performed for the new model.

Pricing and Features: 2013 Toyota Avalon

Base MSRP for the 2013 Avalon has yet to be announced by Toyota. However, shoppers can expect it to fall close to last year's initial asking price of $33,195. Standard features will be extensive, and likely include 17-inch wheels, foglights, automatic headlights, sunroof, a cruise control, dual-zone climate control, power driver's seat and premium stereo.

A Limited trim will also be available that adds such things as automatic wipers, keyless ignition, power passenger's seat, heated front seats and driver memory functions.
