Each year’s crop of new trucks seems to be bigger and more powerful than the previous group. That’s no accident. Auto manufacturers and designers say that constantly scaling their trucks up in size is inevitable, and it’s directly in response to consumer demand. So, what else is new about the top 10 trucks besides increased length, width, height and carrying space? Though size is an important factor to new pickup truck buyers, in terms of both cargo capacity and the truck’s footprint (how big and impressive it looks on the road), it takes a lot more than that to make the list of top 10 pickup trucks. The point of a truck is to get work done and haul stuff around, but fans of pickup trucks take their vehicles seriously, even when they’re not on the job. The best new trucks are available with a bunch of features, both new and old, to improve the driver’s safety, comfort and utility. Power is a factor, too. It takes a lot of engine output to move around such large vehicles, and even more so when it’s loaded down with heavy cargo or tools, or recreational vehicles like boats and motorcycles.

The top trucks are designed with an understanding of this need for versatility. Even the most heavy duty of work trucks will sometimes serve as the owner’s primary vehicle, acting as a commuter and weekend vehicle as well as a workhorse.  Auto manufacturers know that many people who are investing in a big truck, whether or not it is intended primarily for a full time job, will probably need to drive it regularly even when the bed is empty and the trailer isn’t hooked up. The best trucks have to excel at both work and play to make it to the top and find a loyal audience.
