The list of the top 10 high horsepower crossovers illustrates how much these vehicles have evolved over the last few years. Crossovers used to be for people, and usually families, who wanted the size and the styling cues of a sport utility vehicle, but did not want or need all the power that comes along with an SUV. It seemed like the crossover category was a good idea, because many of the auto manufacturers hurried to emulate the ideas of the first few crossover vehicles in the segment. Then car buyers got a little more selective, as they tend to do, and decided (nudged along by the automakers’ marketing) that high performance crossovers were a good idea. Never mind that these vehicles were initially aimed at buyers who did not want or need such powerful crossovers. Since crossovers first hit the market, though, they’ve changed a lot and really defined their strengths. They don’t resemble sport utility vehicles quite as much as they used to, either. And since crossovers have developed a loyal following, there is finally room for high horsepower crossovers in the market.

The crossovers with most horsepower, of course, have all the things that make a crossover useful. There’s just a little more punch from the engine, giving these high horsepower crossovers a bit more speed and an edge over the competition. It might seem like when the auto manufacturers aim for the most horsepower in a crossover, they’re really blurring the lines between crossovers and sport utility vehicles all over again. But even the highest horsepower crossover has an appeal (to its target customer) that a small SUV simply can’t match. Auto designers realized that not everyone wants the aggressiveness of an SUV, in style or in function. Any of the high horsepower crossovers have the speed, but they also have a little modesty.
