Edmunds.com 2011 McLaren MP4-12C Overview
McLaren is one of those storied names in motoring, from its successful Formula One team to its iconic McLaren F1 supercar of the 1990s. Now this British company is at it again with the 2011 McLaren MP4-12C. The MP4 will be powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 mounted amidships and driving the rear wheels. Output is expected to hit about 600 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission available will be a dual-clutch, seven-speed unit that will be operated via paddles. The MP4-12C's construction relies heavily on carbon fiber and aluminum. Consequently, curb weight is said to be fewer than 3,000 pounds. The suspension is notable for its lack of antiroll bars; in their place are hydraulic actuators at each wheel that allow full wheel movement when the MP4 is going straight and provide resistance during cornering. The 2011 McLaren MP4-12C's price (estimated to be about $265,000) will be considerably less than that of the legendary McLaren F1 (which was never officially sold here) or Mercedes SLR McLaren. At this price, it will compete against Ferrari's 458 Italia and the Lamborghini Gallardo. Production is said to be about 1,000 cars worldwide to start and more as demand builds, with a launch date of fall 2010. We've yet to drive the 2011 McLaren MP4-12C, but check back later in the year for a full review.
