Based on the success of the Porsche Cayenne, it was inevitable the company would eventually introduce a smaller SUV to do battle with the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLK models. Well, someday has arrived and the smaller SUV is known as the Porsche Macan (MA-CAHN). In the Indonesian language, Macan means “tiger”.
Two trim levels will be offered when the Macan goes on sale initially; the base model will be known as the Macan S and will be motivated by twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 producing 340 horsepower and 339 ft-lbs of torque. Macan Turbo (yes, we know the other one is turbocharged too, but let’s not get hung up on details—OK?) will run a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6; and gets 400 horsepower and 406 ft-lbs of torque in the bargain.
So yes, the Macan siblings will be powerful. You can also bet they will handle extremely well and be luxuriously equipped. Zero to 60 is estimated at 5.2 seconds for the Macan S, while the Macan Turbo is quoted at 4.6 seconds for the same feat. A seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and all-wheel drive complete both powertrains.
Many people forget Porsche decreed the Cayenne should be just as capable off-road as it is on pavement; after all, Porsche does have a long and successful rally history too. To this end; the Macan has been equipped to perform similarly. Its off-road mode will adjust drive settings to maximize its capabilities on dirt. Available as an option, Macan’s air suspension system will permit raising the Porsche SUV to provide some 9.1-inches of ground clearance.
While we’re discussing options, the Macan IS a Porsche so you know the options list is extremely lengthy. In addition to the air suspension system we referred to earlier, other mechanical upgrades include a torque-vectoring system, a rear differential lock, and ceramic brakes. On the safety front, buyers can opt for items like adaptive cruise control, forward collision alert, and automatic braking. To up the luxury quotient, Porsche is also offering the Macan with a panoramic sunroof and a Burmester audio system.
If past is prologue (and with Porsche it usually is), based on the product strategy employed by the Cayenne’s product planning team, it is almost assured we will eventually see more affordable Macan models, more fuel-effcient Macan models, and more powerful Macan models. In other words, we expect the company will eventually proliferate the Macan universe with a base (non-turbocharged) Macan, Macan Turbo S, Macan Diesel, Macan Hybrid, Macan S Hybrid, and of course, a Macan GTS.
