Cons: seats could be better
Advice: So far............ it's been greatSo far a good little truck, it gets me around town. Economical and reliable and the 2.3 engine is much better than the previous 2.5 , I have no complaints. Reg cab, 4 cyl, 5sp manual
Pros: easy to drive
Cons: steering wheel a little to low
Advice: If it works for you, buy it...........if not, don't buySo far, no problems with this vehicle. I just got for running around and it works great for that. It's fairly comfortable for a small pick up. But if you're looking for comfort and power, go full size. I see all these reviews on various small trucks complaining about lack of power, you want the powerful engines you have to pay for it, by buying a full size truck. I had a toyota tacoma before this one and it was a good vehicle, but I got way more features with the ranger for quite abit less $, and so far it's been just as good. Averages around 23 mpg.....
Pros: Engine performance.
Cons: Some squeaks under the hood that I found, and fixed, when the dealer couldn't.
Advice: Get the best price you can and make them install some different tires, besides Firestone. Get the XLT as the soundproofing is good.Great engine response and gearing is perfect for its intended uses. Low gear is low enough to do some serious off-roading, while the engine just loafs along at 70 mph. It handles ok, but is a pickup, and, as such, is a little light in the rear end. Decent gas mileage, consistently 20 mpg combined with freeway driving over 70 mph. Year is 2000 and have 48 K miles with good reliability. Only problem has been a sticking ignition switch, fixed under warranty. I have the heavy duty suspension and the ride can be rough, but then again, we have some of the worst highways in Calif. The seats are very comfortable, particularly when compared to the seats in my wife's Toyota 4-Runner 4wd. The 4 door is great for access to the back of the cab. It is pretty quiet on the freeway with the XLT package. It has more soundproofing than the regular package. I think it is a great looking pickup.
Pros: Rear wheel drive
Cons: lack of power and uncomfortable seats
Advice: look elsewhere. If you must, definitely buy the largest (4.0L) engine!!!This Ranger is an extended cab with the 3.0L V6. The seats are among the most uncomfortable I have ever used. Fuel economy is dismal at 14 in the city and 16.5 on the road. The 3.0L engine is very sluggish. 0-60 is around 13 seconds. A 1998 Windstar with the 3.0L V6 can easily best this by 2.5 seconds while getting 4 - 6 mpg better fuel economy. Unless you feel compelled to drive a small sluggish uncomfortable pickup, your money would be better spent elsewhere. Passing performance is a joke. This vehicle borders on dangerous with respect to pickup needed to safely merge into freeway traffic. If you look at the engine specs and weight of the vehicle on paper, it looks as if it should have more then acceptable performance, but in reality, it feels like driving a mid 80's Chrysler K car. Obviously Ford did not pay attention to owners of past versions of this vehicle. We have several in our fleet replacing Ford Windstar vans. Not one person driving this vehicle has anything good to say about it.
