2002 Ford Escape - XLT Choice (300A) FWD

    Pros: looks

    Cons: engine suicide

Advice: you're rolling the dice once the warranty runs out

I loved this car until the engine threw a rod and self-destructed at 45000 miles. And this after religiously changing the oil every 3k miles. Also had several warranty repairs, which I can tolerate. But I buy new cars for reliability, not to leave me stranded on I-40 at night 200 miles from home and with a HUGE repair bill (replace engine). It's fun to drive and has nice features, but it's just not reliable. Ford Customer Service said it was my problem since the warranty had expired.

    2004 Suzuki Vitara V6 - (M5) 4x2

    Pros: 3rd row seating standard

    Cons: rear wheel drive

    Advice: look at production date

you don't see too many of these on the road and that's good for the buyer. A low price tag, great look's, and having something everyone else isn't driving is nice. I bought the LX model in Oct of 04. it drives great, a solid feel and the V6 gives power when needed. I have 4 kids so there is lots of room for them, thought the littlest ones dont have a great deal of leg room in the third row. there are some real nice standard features you'll be glad to have like 3 12 volt plugs for electronics the kids bring on long trips. Gas mileage isnt too bad at around 22 HWY. the interior is nice with wood grain and confortable seating. I can fit a twin size mattress in it w/ the seats down too. Wish there was a bit more room behind 3rd row with seats up though. Not thrilled about rear wheel drive, if you have the extra bucks, go for the EX model, especially in New England area.

    2003 Lexus RX 300 - AWD

    Pros: overall ergonomics

Cons: Tires cupped after about 17K miles - Lexus not very helpful is resolving issue. From what I've read

Advice: Atfer-sales service is a bit hyped - caveat emptor

Generally OK. Suspension is a little on the soft side - so car tends to roll quite a bit in turns.

    2005 Hyundai Tucson - LX (A4) 4x4

Pros: Four wheel drive lock up system

    Cons: engine and raod noise

    Advice: Buy one or two

I stumbeled upon Tucson by accident on Hundyai's web site after being so impressed with a rented Sonata I anticipated buying one. A Lexis it's not but very close in enough respects at a price of two for one that you would have to have a room temperture IQ and amnesia to not buy one! In comparison with my 2004 Tyota Avelon LS the only promanent down side is engine and raod noise, sound system and the eather isn't quite as soft and plush. My Tucson LX has many addded features and some same features that work better among them the heater, heated seats and rear window defroster. Tucson has automatic traction control, side air bags, double OHC 24 valve V6, heated mirrors. The FWD lock in system is instantaneous, positive, wounderfully perfect in Maine driving conditions. Do your own do dilligence and buy one you will be pleasantly pleased and very satisfied.

    2004 Acura MDX - w/Touring/RES/Navigation

Pros: NAV & Smooth Luxurious ride

Cons: Inadequate space to rest your left foot while driving & Have to use High Grade Gas

Advice: Very nice ride, but expensive to gas

I really loved the handling of the vehicle and smooth quiet ride it delivers. I was not interested in the NAV until I got a demo and saw the awesome capability.

    2005 Ford Escape - Hybrid (400A) 4x4

    Pros: Fuel economy

    Cons: can't think of anything

    Advice: Do it!

We have had this vehgicle just three weeks and have found that it really is everything they say about it. Good fuel economy, very comfortable seating, enough cargo room for our business, superior handling. The only comparison would have been a non-hybrid SUV which were plentiful, but not the direction we wanted to go. I personally was impressed with Prius as a personal vehicle and that is what made me consider the Ford Escape Hybrid SUV for our business. Incidentally, our business is passenger transportation from Portland, Maine to the Boston and Manchester, N.H. Airports as well as special charter work. Mermaid Transportation is the first company in Maine to use a Ford Escape Hybrid SUV for commercial passenger use. Steve Klein President

    2005 Hyundai Tucson - GLS (A4) FWD

    Pros: V6 and Transmission

    Cons: nothing yet

Advice: Great small car that feels big... great visibility

We just bought a 2005 Tucson and since we haven't put a lot of miles in I can only give first impressions. We love this car. We traded a 2001 Honda Accord which was very uncomfortable, but reliable. The Hyundai is very comfortable, easy to get in and out of. It has great power (V6) and handles wonderfully. We love the look of the smaller Tucson, very sporty. I was a bit concerned about it being a Hyundai, thinking the quality and build would be an issue, but this is a very solid car.
