Getting firsthand information from an actual car owner is one sure way to get an idea of car performance once it leaves the lot. Autobytel features real consumer reviews that give the unbiased experience of a car.
Pros: Interior look, feel and comfort
Cons: Quirky problems that need dealer to fix
Advice: get the 3.0. FAST enough. the 4.4 isn't worth $10k.Unbelievable ride! I am a Lexus SUV convert. Didn't think it could get any better. Well, I was wrong! This is like driving a sports car in an SUV body. Yes, I've had a few issues with minor 'defects' (NEVER had that with my Lexus's), but in the end, its a worthwhile tradeoff! The other wierd thing that I never thought could be fixed in any car that somehow BMW nailed, the sunroof on the X-5 is SILENT when fully open at any speed. Most sunroofs are noise makers that need to be closed to carry on a conversation. How do they do it???
Pros: Performance: Powerful & Nimble. Gives the driver utmost confidence.
Cons: The 2 month wait for it to arrive ... sheer torture!!!
Advice: Don't waste your money on the leather. Standard leatherette is identical and will wear better over time. Spend the $ on the navigation systemC320, IS300, TL S-type, A4... I drove them all. The 330Ci Coupe has them all beat by a longshot. I was only auditioning cars as a potential replacement for a current lease that will be coming due this summer. After experiencing the comfort and hair-on-fire performance of the 330, I placed my order on the spot. I simply couldn't wait another 4 months. Honestly, I've never been this impressed with a car during a test drive.
Pros: Embarassed to say, seat massager (but not seat back!) and those shades.
Cons: weight, iDrive & voice implementation (I'm in Silicon Valley)
Advice: Get luxury seats, convenience pkg., & shades. Park distance system a toy. 19' wheels are ok.I took delivery February 26 so I do not have a lot of hours in it as of yet. First impression is 'it's ok'. Not great, not bad. My expectations were a bit higher through all the hype. Definite plusses include greater efficiency of the engine, active stabilizers, quiet ride, and gotta love those electric side & rear sunshades. The bummers include lousy iDrive integration with phone & nav, slow or stumbling go from a standstill, with or without the auto park feature, mediocre voice activiation system, a sorely lacking back or escape key by the iDrive knob, and a turning radius akin to my last Jag Vanden Plas, limoesque.
Cons: remote wont let me in to drive the car!!!!!
Advice: WAIT UNTIL BMW GETS THE FREQUENCY PROBLEM FIXED OR YOU WILL NOT GET TO ENJOY ITcar is great. it takes hours to learn to use the IDRIVE computer, but well worth the time. performance and handling are umatched. After 3 weeks and 1400 miles it a wonderfull car. BUT BIG PROBLEM THE REMOTE TO OPEN THE DOORS DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK. SO YOU MUST USE THE EMERGENCY KEY. BMW IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT NO FIX IN SITE.THEY CLAIM IT HAS TO DO WITH THE FREQUENCY.
Pros: SMG gear box
Cons: interior, dont pay extra for the HK sound, not worth it
Advice: get SMG,this car reminds me when I drove a GoCart for the first time. Fun! Fun! Fun!, Especially with the SMG paddles, it's Grand Tourismo 2 in real life.
Advice: test drive itI have 9000 miles on a 3.01 and I love this car. It is solid, fast for a 6, and it is fun to drive.
Advice: Get his great bang for a buck car!For a 2.5 litre engine size combined with the gearing this cars is quick and zippy. One can do 100 mph in 5th and just pass the peak torque band @3500 rpm. But BMW seems to have modified the torque curve so that it is flatter giving a lower peak torque @3500 rpm but increasing the overall hp from 170 (99-00 models)to 184 (b)hp. it simply means one can have more overall torque in gears 3, 4 and 5 and spend much time in there, without having to shift gears frantically. So it's quick but not fast and that's what one gets into the 330 for if one is looking for a better acceleration/power band. The 2.5 litres seems to be a core engine size and having been there since 92 -95 (as the bigger engine size)and 98-current as the smaller engine size, it has lot of acceleration and power to offer. To put it smartly it's a great bang for the buck. i mean where else would one find 184 pure bred Arabian Stallions pounding down the freeway, combined with the looks, styling and handling for less than $27k. Amenities, i ordered moonroof and Titanium silver in my 2-dr. version. Rest is stock, which for 2002 includes Automatic climate control, in-dash CD pathway lighting, 4-function obc, and remote entry. I found this to be plentiful as rest just gets in the way for enjoying the car. This is truly a driver’s car. The handling is great and BMW has come up with aluminum suspension parts and pistons heads and so is the engine block is with coated with cast-iron liners. So overall weight is reduced thus improving handling. The 17' wheels offer better grip compared to the stock Conti's which squeal when cornered too tight too fast. The DSC system is great, it's standard and measures wheel spin, steering wheel angle, rotation about yaw-axis to correct wheel slippage. One gripe that i could think of when i compare it to my E36 ('97 328i)is the oversteer in 2002 3'ers. Slight but it's still there. Well perhaps to overcome the understeer of the early model years. But i am happy with the current car and this is the also last model year for the coupe before it gets a face-lift like 02 sedans next year.
