2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Review

The 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer brings more than a few changes to the model's lineup. A new Lancer model is now available, and all Lancers got a bit more power. There are currently five trim levels offered for the Lancer, though only three of them can actually be termed "Lancers." The standard trim levels available are the base DE, followed by the ES and GTS trim levels. The Ralliart Lancer is the new model debuting for 2009, which offers tremendous differences.

The DE and ES trim levels make use of a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine putting out 152 hp. The GTS model enjoys a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder that makes 168 hp. All three trim levels can be equipped with a manual transmission or Mitsubishi's CVT. The Ralliart offers a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that puts out 237, thanks to its turbocharger. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, much to the chagrin of some drivers.

Finally, the Lancer Evolution is also available in all-wheel drive; the Evo offers GSR and MR trim levels and make use of a single engine. The 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is turbocharged and puts out 291-hp. The GSR trim level makes use of a 5-speed manual transmission, while the performance MR trim level gets a 6-speed automatic.

2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Performance

The standard Lancer trims (DE, ES and GTS) are slow from a start, even with the manual transmission. The CVT is a poor choice and should be avoided with these models. The GTS model with the larger engine is a bit better, but still somewhat sluggish. Of course, the Ralliart trim level offers plenty of power, once it gets going. The best option for those with a need for speed is the Evolution, which is a true powerhouse, whether from a stop or during highway driving.

Fuel economy varies drastically between Lancer models. For instance, the DE and ES models come in around 26 mpg, while the GTS gets about 25 mpg. The Evolution doesn't get more than 20 mpg. Obviously, using the turbocharger will significantly reduce fuel economy.

Low-end models have sufficient handling capabilities, but are not sporty. The GTS is a bit better, while the Ralliart is still better, yet. Of course, the Evolution is the star of the show and offers powerful handling and braking on almost any surface. The one drawback to the Evo is that it has a very wide turning radius, making it a bit difficult to maneuver in tight areas.

Ride quality on low-end models is considerable, while the GTS and Ralliart trim levels are firm, but controlled. The Evolution is extremely firm and may actually be a bit uncomfortable for some drivers unaccustomed to sports car suspensions.

2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Interior

The Lancer lineup shares few things in common, but the interior of the vehicles is certainly one of them. All Lancers suffer from a humdrum interior, including the very pricey Ralliart and Evolution trim levels. The largest complaint about the interior is that it seems far too cheap for the price paid. That said, all controls are laid out logically, with large displays for ample information. In addition, the climate controls are very large and can be reached with just a bit of work. The audio controls are a bit out of easy reach, but are easy enough to work, once you do reach them.

The front seats provide more than ample headroom and legroom, even for tall drivers and passengers. The sports seating in the upgraded models is incredibly supportive, while the base models are comfortable enough for everyday driving. The rear seats are supportive, but the space is somewhat constricting. There is enough room for two adults to squeeze into the back, though.

Cargo space is a bit on the small side. The trunk is small, but well shaped for storage; it is also short, meaning that large or bulky items may not fit well. The cargo pockets in the cabin are useful, but there are few other built in storage areas.

2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Safety Features

All 2009 Mitsubishi Lancers feature several safety systems for your protection. Dual front airbags, daytime running lights, driver knee airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, front side airbags and side curtain airbags are standard on all Lancers.

Summary

The Lancer is an excellent vehicle, but to truly get the power and performance that you want, you will have to shell out cash for the higher end Ralliart or Evolution trim levels. Even the GTS trim level is a better choice than the DE or ES.
