One look at the curvaceous lines and racy wheels found on the Galant and you'll understand the "break the mold" philosophy behind every Mitsubishi car and truck. After all, where is it written that a family sedan has to be mundane? What could it hurt to give the family hauler a little class, a dash of boy-racer, or even a down-right mean look? Apparently the engineers at Mitsubishi have been asking the same questions.

The Galant sedan is available in four trim levels: DE, ES, LS and GTZ. The base DE comes standard with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine capable of 140-horsepower. Though it is the low man on the Galant totem pole, the DE is not cheaply outfitted. It includes 15-inch wheels and tires, air conditioning, automatic transmission and a 4-speaker AM/FM radio with CD player. A step up to the ES brings a few more niceties to the Galant, including the option of a powerful V6 engine. At the top end of the Galant line is the luxury LS model, which includes 16-inch alloy wheels, leather seating surfaces, traction control, power glass sunroof and a seven-speaker premium sound system with CD player. But the one you'll really want, the one that will draw you toward it like a moth to the proverbial flame, is the GTZ. Its sport-tuned suspension, lowered front air dam, and aggressive wheel and tire package transform the nimble Galant into a curve-devouring beast.

All Galant models can seat five passengers and provide generous head and legroom figures that easily rival—and in some areas best—the competition from Honda and Toyota. The Galant's suspension is tuned more toward the sporting, in keeping with Mitsubishi's image as a performance car company. On the road, even the base Galant handles brilliantly and is very tossable in twisty turns while on the open highway, the ride is as smooth and stable as any luxury car. There are a few shortcomings. The GTZ has no 5-speed manual option, side impact airbags are not available on the base DE model and the interior—though thoughtfully laid out—could do with a little less gray plastic. Aside from these minor nit-picks, the Galant makes a powerful argument for bucking the status quo.
