2015 kia sedona

There was a time when the Kia Sedona made a play for budget-conscious minivan shoppers seeking to get in at the entry-level of the people mover market.  The 2015 Kia Sedona makes it clear that this attitude is a thing of the past, as the redesigned family hauler courts a different class of clientele: although it's starting price hovers around the $25,000 mark, you can pay well over $42k for the stylish minivan should you go hog-wild on the options sheet.  The new Sedona looks the part, too, with a new shape and level of detailing that befits Kia's fashion-conscious design standards.

Let's take a look at 10 things you need to know about the 2015 Kia Sedona.

01. The 2015 Kia Sedona Features Sleek Styling

Right out of the box the 2015 Kia Sedona blows past the previous generation of the minivan in terms of looks.  Featuring the now-ubiquitous honeycomb grille that has become standard equipment for Kia automobiles, the Sedona adopts a more aggressive yet not overly muscular appearance that shows off plenty of attitude.  A character line down either side of the van leads the eye back to a simple yet clean rear hatch, and both the front and rear bumpers can be had with a valance that adds a splash of brightness to the bottom of the vehicle.  LED driving lights and more chrome than in years past further serve to highlight the Kia Sedona's new details, and a spoiler on the roof helps to keep the rear glass clean while lengthening the roofline ever so slightly.

02. The 2015 Kia Sedona Is Larger Than Before

Of course, it's not just the spoiler that makes the 2015 Kia Sedona seem a little bit longer and wider than it was one model year ago.  The Kia Sedona is an inch longer that it was in 2014, and part of that dimensional boost can be attributed to a wheelbase that has itself been stretched by 1.6 inches.  Although the Sedona hasn't seen its width change year-to-year, the use of shorter front and rear overhangs and the decision to drop the roof by half an inch have further contributed to the more imposing appearance of the new model.

03. The 2015 Kia Sedona Offers Massive, But Not Class-Leading Cargo Space

Minivans are all about hauling, whether it be people or cargo, and the 2015 Kia Sedona doesn't disappoint.  With all three rows of seating in place, the Kia Sedona is capable of swallowing just under 34 cubic feet of gear in the 'trunk' between the rear seatback and the hatch.  Folding down the third row creates a flat load floor that more than doubles carrying capacity to 78.4 cubic feet, and with the second set of accommodations also out of the picture the Kia Sedona can tackle 142 cubic feet of cargo.  While this is much more room than what is on offer in most full-size SUVs and crossovers, it still lags behind the class leading Toyota Sienna by roughly eight cubes.

04. The 2015 Kia Sedona Improves On Passenger Comfort

The 2015 Kia Sedona offers three rows of seating that can be configured in one of two ways, depending on your budget and what duties you will be needing the van for most often.  The eight passenger edition of the Kia Sedona features second and third row benches, with the second row able to slide up against the back of the front buckets to maximize cargo space - an arrangement Kia has named 'Slide-n-Stow.'  If passenger comfort is more important than hauling oversized items then you can sacrifice a bit of cargo room in favor of a pair of captain's chairs that come with their own folding leg rests.  This is a rare luxury in the minivan world, and the vehicle also comes with the choice of standard anti-microbial YES fabric covers to facilitate cleaning or more upscale Nappa leather hides.

05. The 2015 Kia Sedona Comes With A New Drivetrain

The 2015 Kia Sedona comes exclusively with a 3.3-liter V-6 engine that has been rated to produce 276 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque.  While this unit might be a smaller one than the 3.5-liter V-6 that the Kia Sedona offered in 2014, it's actually more powerful to the tune of seven additional ponies and two more lb-ft of torque.  Kia has also tuned the motor to deliver better mid-range torque to help with acceleration on the highway and on secondary roads.  A six-speed automatic transmission is standard with the Kia, and it features a manual shift mode.

06. The 2015 Kia Sedona Delivers Slightly Better Fuel Economy

Minivans are big and heavy and the 2015 Kia Sedona is no exception: its curb weight tips the scales at 4,414 for the least-equipped model in the line-up.  With that in mind, and considering the box-like aerodynamics associated with its practical shape, the fact that fuel mileage has improved at all versus the year before is to be applauded.  It's a small increase, to be sure - entry-level editions now post 18-mpg in city driving as compared to 17-mph in 2014 - and it's paired with an unchanged 24-mpg highway rating.  The Sedona stays within a mile per gallon or two of each of its major rivals save the Honda Odyssey, which leads the segment with 19-mpg city and 28-mpg highway.

07. The 2015 Kia Sedona Can Be Had In Five Trim Levels

The 2015 Kia Sedona offers five different trim levels to satisfy a wider range of price points and buyer tastes than in the past.  The Kia Sedona L offers the sliding YES-fabric second row seats, power windows and door locks, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, and a four-speaker stereo system, while the LX introduces a rearview camera, parking assistance, and a power driver's seat.  The EX trim adds USB ports, an upgraded gauge cluster, push button start, three zones of automatic climate control, and leather upholstery.  The Sedona SX comes with highlights such as the ability to select from multiple drive modes and a power front passenger seat (with heaters for front and rear positions), while the Limited goes all-out with gear like a heated steering wheel, wood trim, reclining lounge seats in the second row, and Nappa leather all around.

08. The 2015 Kia Sedona Features The Uvo System

The 2015 Kia Sedona's Uvo system does more than provide driver and passengers with a touchscreen and voice interface for controlling various vehicle functions.  In addition to its infotainment and Internet-streaming capabilities, Uvo also affords the Kia Sedona with a number of new features not found in older versions of the minivan, including a 'geofencing' option that can automatically alert you if the Sedona strays from a pre-selected area (useful for monitoring teen drivers).  This is paired with function that also monitors the vehicle's speed and how late at night it's being driven, with alerts being sent back to home base should the Kia break curfew or accelerate a little too enthusiastically.

09. The 2015 Kia Sedona Drives Better Than Expected

Minivans will never be sports cars - nor will they approach the level of handling demonstrated even by the average sedan - but the 2015 Kia Sedona has cleaned up its act when it comes to cornering and braking thanks to its new platform.  Kia engineers have raised the torsional stiffness of the Sedona by 36 percent, a feat that was accomplished through the widespread adoption of high strength steel throughout the vehicle's body and chassis.  A new shock absorber design also helps to keep the Kia Sedona stable through the curves, and it has been paired with revised crossmember bushings that improve overall driving feel on a variety of road surfaces.

10. The 2015 Kia Sedona Adds New Active Safety Features

All versions of the 2015 Kia Sedona of course come with full length side curtain airbags, dual forward airbags, seat-mounted side airbags up front, and electronic stability control and traction control.  New for 2015, however, are a host of active safety features for the Kia Sedona.  These include the availability of a blind spot monitoring system, a forward collision warning system, and a lane departure warning system, with the latter two available via the Limited Technology package on top-tier models.  Lesser Sedona models have to make do with the blind spot monitor only.
