2013 Mazda MAZDASPEED3 Summary

Changes for the 2013 Mazda Mazdaspeed 3

The 2013 Mazdaspeed 3 model’s optional Technology Package adds a new voice-activated navigation and infotainment system equipped with a 5.8-inch color touchscreen. The system includes SMS text messaging, e911 mergency services, HD Radio, and Pandora Internet radio. This year, Mazda’s hot hatch also gets new gunmetal-finish wheels.

Model Lineup

The 2013 Mazda Mazdaspeed 3 is a 5-door, performance-tuned hatchback equipped with a powerful, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine fed by a functional hood scoop. A manual gearbox is the only transmission choice, and the Mazdaspeed 3 is equipped with a limited-slip differential, a Mazda Advanced Torque Management System, larger brakes, revised exhaust tuning, and 18-inch gunmetal-finish aluminum wheels wrapped in 225/40R18 summer performance tires.

Inside, the Mazdaspeed 3 is equipped with leather-bolstered sport seats with cloth inserts, special red accents, aluminum pedals, a turbo boost gauge, and a premium surround sound audio system.

In addition to the new infotainment system discussed above, the optional Technology Package includes satellite radio, an Adaptive Front Lighting System with automatic bi-xenon headlights, LED taillights, rain-sensing wipers, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry and Start, and a Blind Spot Monitoring System.

Engines and Transmissions

The functional hood scoop that dominates the Mazdaspeed 3’s front styling feeds cool air to the direct-injected, turbocharged, 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine, which produces 263 horsepower at 5,300 rpm and 280 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,000 rpm. Mazdaspeed keeps poseurs at bay by making a 6-speed manual transmission equipped with a limited-slip differential and a Mazda Advanced Torque Management System the only transmission choice.

Fuel Economy Ratings

According to the EPA, the 2013 Mazda Mazdaspeed 3 should return 18 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg in combined driving.

Safety Ratings

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Mazda 3 upon which the Mazdaspeed 3 is based receives a “Top Safety Pick” designation. In tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Mazda 3 receives a 4-star overall crash-test rating. However, side-impact protection is not impressive, rating 3 stars overall with a 2-star rating given for rear passenger protection and a 3-star rating issued for protection of the car skids laterally into a pole.

Technology Highlights

The Mazdaspeed 3’s optional Technology Package adds adaptive headlights, a blind-spot information system, and a new touchscreen infotainment system with voice recognition, text messaging capability and e911 emergency services. The e911 system contacts emergency rescue personnel when the car’s airbags deploy, helping to speed rescue following a collision.

The Mazdaspeed 3 is also equipped with a limited-slip differential and a Mazda Advanced Torque Management System. Together, they attempt to limit wheelspin and manage torque steer.
