2010 Mazda MAZDA3 is the Fuel Sipper for Those Who Want to Drive Fast

Aggressive styling and a powerful engine aren't typical adjectives used to describe the average fuel-efficient vehicle. However, the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3 is not your typical compact gas sipper. If you're looking for an affordable and eco-friendly car that still has the ability to give you an adrenaline rush, then the MAZDA3 should be at the top of your list.

Granted, at an estimated 25 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, there are other compact rivals out there that outperform the 2010 MAZDA3 in the arena of fuel efficiency. However, none of Mazda's competitors can beat the hearty handling, substantial acceleration and overall fun-to-drive experience offered by the MAZDA3.

The Mazda's base engine is a capable 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 148 horsepower and 135 lb-ft. of torque. Opt for the upgrade 2.5-liter engine, and you'll be rewarded with 167 horsepower and 168 lb-ft. of torque (21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway).

In comparison, the Honda Fit - another affordable sporty compact - maxes out at only 117 horsepower. Similarly, the sport-inspired Scion xD makes only 128 horsepower.

Further adding to the Mazda MAZDA3's zippy appeal is a well-tuned suspension, sure-footed clutch and superior brakes that can stop on a dime. Add it all up, and the MAZDA3 is a smart bargain given the $15,295 starting price.

The MAZDA3 isn't all muscle, either. Inside, the level of quality and upscale amenities belies the wallet-friendly MSRP. The dashboard exudes a pleasant elegance and a naturally intuitive design. Exceptionally comfortable seating and the tranquility of a whisper-quiet interior further pamper front-seat passengers. Thanks to a welcome lack of hard interior plastics, the MAZDA3 also succeeds in providing a better fit and finish than most competitors.

Refinement can be further bolstered with optional upgrades such as leather seating, dual-zone climate control and a 10-speaker stereo system.

Safety features are also fairly substantial, with six airbags, anti-lock brakes, brake assist and electronic brake force distribution all coming standard. Optional safety equipment includes traction control and dynamic stability control. The 2010 MAZDA3 earns a best-possible "Good" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Downsides of the 2010 MAZDA3 include a tight-quartered rear seat and merely average storage capacity. The bold exterior styling may also turn off some shoppers. However, if you like the style and dimensions of the MAZDA3, then you'll likely have few complaints about this capable compact.

If you're in the market for a fuel-efficient and fun-to-drive vehicle, then you may also want to take a look at the 2010 Honda Civic. With 140 horsepower, the base model isn't quite as fast as the MAZDA3, but does earn better fuel efficiency.

For even better vehicle performance, you'll have to pony up a few extra thousand dollars to climb behind the wheel of a Volkswagen Golf or Scion tC. The VW Golf TDI is especially enticing thanks to its massive 236 lb-ft. of torque and 34 mpg of combined fuel efficiency.
