While most Mazda fans were focused on the recent premiere of the 2016 Miata — see here — the automaker was posting big-time sales improvements with current entries like the 2015 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover. Combining SKYACTIV performance and technology with a practical price point of $21,545, the 2015 Mazda CX-5 garnered 10,709 sales in August, representing a 25.9 percent jump in demand.

The SKYACTIV-ated 2015 Mazda6 also enjoyed surging interest last month. Competing against some of the top-selling names in the industry, like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, Mazda's mid-sized sedan grew volume by 32.5 percent in August, when it delivered 5,631 units.

And that led Ron Stettner, vice president of sales for Mazda North America Operations, to note that: "Mazda6 and CX-5 continue to grow as consumer favorites. We are seeing customers come out of premium vehicles to get into a Mazda because of the driving dynamics, styling and interior appointments. The quality of our products offer consumers a near-premium experience for a great value."

Autobytel has been tracking a bit of an upset in the Mazda ranks, however. Although the SKYACTIV advantage has delivered strong sales for the 2015 Mazda CX-5 and Mazda6, the Mazda3, also equipped with that technology, has been treading water most of the year. It's still the best-selling Mazda on the marketplace, but the second-place 2015 Mazda CX-5 had closed the gap to a bare 162 units in August.

Meanwhile, the Mazda2, without SKYACTIV powertrain, chassis and transmission improvements, has suddenly revived. Last month's volume jumped up by 42.3 percent, albeit on 1,080 units, and year-to-date sales are up by 55.3 percent for the Mazda subcompact.

All told, Mazda sales grew by 11.4 percent in August, backed by 31,305 deliveries.

(Note: Just to be clear here, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, as well as the next-gen Mazda2, will make the leap to SKYACTIV performance for their latest iterations.)
