The 2013 Mazda CX-5 is an all-new crossover SUV that many will find appealing thanks to a solid balance of engine power and fuel efficiency. Early reviews suggest the CX-5 is a much more competitive compact SUV when compared to the previously available Mazda CX-7. Keep reading to review the specs, pricing and features of the 2013 Mazda CX-5 to determine if it's the right SUV for your lifestyle.

Styling: 2013 Mazda CX-5

True to the Mazda nameplate, the Mazda CX-5 receives bold lines and aggressive styling that hint at its above-average power under the hood. A rounded front grille recedes into a sleek, slightly pulled back body frame that does well to help it stand out from the compact SUV pack. If you are looking for an SUV with just a bit of flash, then the Mazda CX-5 is certainly worth a look.

Inside, Mazda engineers were tasked with maximizing cabin space, while keeping the overall body small and lightweight. For the most part, they succeeded – four passengers will likely find little to quibble about when it comes to vehicle comfort. However, pack in an extra passenger, and the rear seat may feel a bit cramped. The CX-5 interior offers enough soft-touch materials and upscale accents to give the vehicle a stylish appeal. The vehicle's 34 cubic feet of storage space (65 cubic feet with rear seats down) are competitive for the class.

Performance: 2013 Mazda CX-5

By all accounts, engine performance is where the 2013 Mazda CX-5 really shines. The base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that outputs 155 horsepower and 150 lb-ft. of torque. This engine offers fairly good acceleration and exceptional handling. Like most Mazda vehicles, the CX-5 can be described as, "fun to drive."

Despite this athletic performance, Mazda also claims the CX-5 will beat out all other SUVs in its class when it comes to fuel efficiency. Though not yet tested by the EPA, Mazda promises fuel figures to the tune of 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Add on the optional all-wheel drive, and these numbers are predicted to drop to 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

Available transmissions for the 2013 CX-5 include a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic (all-wheel drive models are only available with an automatic transmission).
