If the old Cadillac Catera was the “Caddy that zigs” then no doubt the all-new Posh Spice Edition Range Rover Evoque (not its real name) must be the SUV that knows how to “zig-a-zig-ah!” And if you want to be this very upscale SUV’s owner, you have got to get with Posh’s friends—namely lots and lots of cash. Hold on to your designer hats ladies and gentleman. The new Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham (the real name) stickers for $128,000.
Now, we love the Evoque but for that kind of cash you can get a real Range Rover and not an Audi Q5/BMW X3/Lexus RX/Acura RDX competitor with some unique trim, color and design alterations. Where in the name of all that is good and holy did Range Rover come up with this price? Did they pick that price because it is the same amount of money Mrs. Beckham spends each month on her pouting and posing classes?
We also wonder what, besides her ability to buy all of the high end designer fashions she desires, qualifies Posh Spice to be granted a special edition of any vehicle? Honestly, does anyone ever remember her actually singing when she was in “The Spice Girls?” Yes, people, that was before she married the most famous soccer star in the world. Let’s also not forget that she also was part and parcel in creating the cinematic horror show known as “Spice World.” As expected, Victoria spent the whole film pretty much silent…and pouting.
Fast forward to Range Rover’s unveiling of this new Special Edition and none too surprisingly she spent the entire press conference pouting with her hands on her “sassier than thou” hip. But, as a shocking twist, she did actually speak. "I wanted (to design) a car that I want to drive, but then David would feel proud to jump in it and take the car to training," she explained. "So, I wanted a car that had a masculine feel, as well. Something that was cool, but not too try-hard." So how did she accomplish this goal?
Her first inspiration came from a man’s rose gold Rolex watch that her fashion forward, man-scaping husband David Beckham gave her for her birthday. As such, the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham features admittedly cool looking 20-inch rose gold accented alloy wheels as well as a hand finished matte grey exterior paint finish accented by black roof pillars and wheelarches. Moving to the interior you get semi-aniline vintage tan leather seats with 'baseball' stitch detailing extending to the door inserts, armrests and the central storage box lid.
Topping off this mountain of overpriced minutiae is a micro suede headliner, floormats hewn from mohair with the big finish being a four-piece leather luggage set and a hand-stitched, rose gold-accented leather case for the owner's manual. And get this, the owner’s manual is autographed by none other than Posh Spice herself. We have to wonder, does she sign her name “Posh Spice” or “Victoria Beckham?” Either way, we think that even though Range Rover is only making 200 copies of this Special Edition, next time they should spend their money a bit more wisely and hire the Beckham who possesses actual talent. Now a David Beckham Range Rover is an idea we could get behind.
