2014 Kia Forte Koup Summary

Changes for the 2014 Kia Forte Koup:

The Forte Koup is redesigned for 2014, longer, lower, wider, and more powerful than it used to be. An available turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is new, along with standard UVO eServices technology, FlexSteer driver-selectable steering settings, LED positioning lights, and LED taillights. New options include HID headlights, a ventilated driver’s seat, and Smart Key passive entry with push-button starting.

Model Lineup:

The 2014 Kia Forte Koup is sold in EX and SX trim levels. The Forte Koup SX adds a more powerful turbocharged engine paired with a standard 6-speed manual gearbox, larger front brake discs, and a sport-tuned suspension. Parts of the exterior trim are painted black, and the SX includes 18-inch aluminum wheels, LED fog lights, and LED taillights. At night, when the owner approaches and unlocks the doors, the Forte Koup SX model’s door handle pockets are illuminated and perimeter lighting welcomes the driver. Kia’s Smart Key passive entry system is also standard, and includes push-button engine starting.

Engines and Transmissions:

A 173-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is standard for the Forte Koup EX, paired with a standard 6-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels. The Forte Koup SX gets a turbocharged, 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 201 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 195 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,750 rpm to 4,500 rpm. The SX model is equipped with a standard 6-speed manual gearbox, with a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters available at extra cost.

Fuel Economy Ratings:

The 2014 Kia Forte Koup EX is rated to get 28 mpg in combined driving. The more powerful Forte Koup SX gets 25 mpg in combined driving regardless of transmission choice.

Safety Ratings:

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has performed crash tests on the 2014 Kia Forte Koup as this summary is written. Testing has been conducted for the similar Forte Sedan, and the results leave something to be desired.

The Forte Sedan gets a 4-star overall rating from the NHTSA due to an unimpressive 3-star frontal crash protection rating. The IIHS gives the Forte Sedan the top rating of “Good” in all assessments except the small overlap frontal-impact test, for which the car rates “Poor.”

While the Forte Koup’s 2-door layout might prove a little better than the Forte Sedan’s 4-door architecture once testing is completed, it actually needs to be a lot better.

Technology Highlights:

With the 2014 Forte Koup’s standard UVO eServices technology, owners can pair a smartphone to the system and enjoy 911 Connect service, which can help speed rescuers to the scene of an accident following an airbag deployment. The system also offers the ability to perform diagnostic checks on the vehicle, schedule service appointments, search Google for specific points of interest, and more. A UVO eServices app on your smartphone offers a Parking Minder service, which helps you to find the car in a crowded parking lot.
